Big emotional release isn’t necessarily the goal.

In depth-oriented trauma work, what matters more than intensity is capacity.

Can we stay with our sadness without collapsing?
Our anger without escalating?
Our fear without disconnecting?

Staying with what we feel doesn’t mean suppressing it OR making it bigger. It means gradually developing the capacity to remain present with emotional experience while
staying connected with ourselves.

When that capacity grows, emotions can be integrated rather than acted out or acted in.

Emotional integration doesn’t necessarily involve a dramatic release. It unfolds over time as we learn to stop disconnecting from what's arising.

We experience or witness trauma. We look to those in power to help. Those in power deny it, rewrite it, victim blame, gaslight us into believing it isn’t true.

You aren’t misreading it.

When early connection felt unsafe or unreliable—when we were ignored, unseen, or chronically misunderstood—anger may have become one of the ways we protected ourselves.

What may look like “rage” on the surface often points to something much more tender underneath: a longing to be met, to matter, to feel connected.

For people healing from the effects of developmental trauma, anger is often less about hostility and more about heartbreak.

In NARM, we don’t pathologize anger. We get curious about what it’s organizing around—the unmet needs, early pain, and patterns of disconnection that have shaped someone’s relationship with themselves and others.

You’ve done the inner work. You understand the origins of your patterns.
And still, the patterns return.

This isn’t a failure of effort or insight. Awareness can be meaningful, but it doesn’t automatically shift the survival strategies that formed early on.

Insight alone doesn’t reorganize longstanding patterns. Change often happens as we develop more capacity to stay connected with ourselves in the present—especially in the places where we once had to disconnect.

Over time, new relational and internal experiences start to register. Possibilities open. Longstanding patterns loosen. What once felt fixed becomes more flexible.

Accepting that we don’t have all the answers, that we don’t know what will happen next...
