Hello friends! We uploaded a NEW WEBINAR today!

"Improving movement, cognition, and memory: Slowing neurological disease progression and turning short term memory into long term memory."

In an era with an overall aging population (baby boomers and older), dementia, mild cognitive decline, Alzheimer’s, and other memory disorders are becoming much more common. This generally creates stress, anxiety, and other issues - not only for the patient experiencing it, but for caregivers, families, friends, and others.

Using a simple two step methodology including short bouts of exercise (30 seconds to 3 minutes in length) which elevate the heart rate in addition to subsequent, post-exercise cognitive and memory challenges (varying in length depending upon individual patient abilities), patients work towards: turning short term memory into long term, and improving reaction time, alertness, and movement.

Benefits of cardio-vascular exercise have been known for many decades. In this modality of rehabilitation, cardio-vascular exercises help to improve a patient’s ability to focus and learn.

During the period of heart rate elevation, several neurochemicals are created in the brain, including Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF). BDNF and other neurochemicals are known to help slow the progression of dying brain cells.

Additionally, it helps to improve attention, cognition, comprehension, and ability to focus. In between cardiovascular exercises, the period of hyper-focus on a cognition/memory task causes the production of norepinephrine and Acetylcholine (a chemical which marks “learning event” brain cells for strengthening during sleep). Followed by an adequate amount of sleep (at a normal sleep time for the individual), memory will generally improve.

While preventative measure can and should be taken to fend off any form of cognitive decline, we know that memory can almost always be improved by implementing a regular regimen of cardiovascular exercises mixed with memory and cognition exercises. Adequate sleep is the icing on the cake to allow for maximum neuroplasticity and improved cognition, memory, and movement.

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of talking with Erica DeMarch, Founder and CEO of Step & Connect, a research-driven company producing medical devices, exercise-related educational programs, and training systems for improving balance.

Twenty years of expertise as a physical therapist in the areas of neurorehabilitation and vestibular rehab, led Erica to develop the core product line of the business, the patented Balance Matters® System, a device based on science that incorporates sensory feedback (visual, auditory, and tactile) to improve sensory processing, equilibrium strategies & gait mechanics.

She is the author of the children’s book, ‘How do you Balance Like That?’ and developed an intergenerational balance program that goes along with the book.

Erica DeMarch, PT, MSPT graduated with a master's degree in Physical Therapy from Boston University in 2002. She started her career at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in New Jersey where she worked primarily with the neurological population and specialized in traumatic brain injury in both the inpatient rehab and outpatient depts. She then moved to New York City and worked at New York-Presbyterian Hospital specializing in neurology and geriatrics in the acute care, acute rehab, and outpatient depts. In 2010, Erica moved to Denver and worked at South Valley Physical Therapy, a specialized vestibular and neurology outpatient clinic.

Erica has a passion for learning and teaching. She serves as an affiliate faculty member at South College Physical Therapy School. Erica edited the Parkinson’s chapter of the Pathology Textbook, 5th and 4th edition, Implications for the Physical Therapist. She has presented at multiple conferences and teaches continuing education courses globally on the importance of incorporating balance and motor learning into exercise programs.

She participated in a pilot research study at Regis University studying the Use of Real-time Multimodal Sensory Feedback to Improve Backward Gait and Retention for People with Parkinson Disease and continues to collaborate with researchers for program development.

Within her local community, Erica teaches balance workshops and group exercise classes for individuals with Parkinson’s Disease and older adults. She loves collaborating with other therapists to best serve her clients and consults 1 day each week at Wetzler Integrative Physical Therapy.
