What's stopping you from pursuing your wellness goals? How many times have you told yourself "next month I'm starting...."?
For me the frequent excuses were time and money. Joining group exercise classes at a local gym was expensive, and when would I have the time to be at the gym 3-4 days a week for an hour at a time?
But then I decided I needed to adjust my perspective. Hear me out for a second. My three kids are involved in so many sports and clubs. My life is full of soccer, football, basketball, lacrosse, cheerleading, track, math club, robotics team, youth group, and afterschool science. Our evenings and weekends are full of games, practices, meetings, and tournaments. Over the years, we've coached teams, we've led clubs, we've been team manager and room parent. In the last year for just soccer, I've spent about $1200 for the club fees, not to mention all the stuff that adds up (traveling, gear, etc). And that's just soccer. But we do these things and spend this time and money on our kids for a couple of important reasons. First, physical activity is healthy and we want that to be part of our kids' lifestyle from an early age. Second, the social/emotional aspect of youth sports is valuable for their development. They learn sportsmanship, responsibility, being a dependable team member, navigating team dynamics, and so many of their friendships have been built around their sports teams. So we, and many other parents, invest the time and money on our kids extra curricular activities while barely batting an eye.
Now lets challenge this mentality. Why is it so easy for me to spend that time and money on my kids and not on myself? That's what I had to ask myself recently as I was considering joining a 6-week fitness class that felt a little pricey for me. Why do I constantly say yes to fees and time commitments for my kids, but not for myself? Why wasn't my own health and wellness as important to me as my kids' wellness? How am I taking care of myself now so that when they're older I can be just as active in my future grandkids' lives?
So what's stopping you? Are you ready to make the investment in your wellness? I am looking for 5-10 adults for the first cohort of my online course - POWER-Up Wellness. I want to share lifestyle changing strategies that are backed by research and peer-reviewed evidence not fads and gimmicks. Because wellness is more that just a diet, more than just a new exercise regimen. Wellness is holistic!
