This US Large Cent is one of the more frequently encountered ones, and digital photo manipulation was applied to make it visible. The dark brown color, similar to dark chocolate, is a result of these coins being widely used in the economy, leading to wear and tear.

Keep on learning. Cronebane 1/2 Penny minted in Ireland during the 1790s. Taking a photo and using a search engine, I was able to attribute this copper 1/2 penny. That’s half the fun…..the search.

How do you hedge against negative financial market movement?

Here you see (4) US Half Eagles ($5.00) and (4) US Quarter Eagles ($2.50). The first two $5 are Classic Head varieties and the second two are the Liberty Head variety. The 4 quarter eagles are the Indian variety.

These 3 different varieties were the cornerstone of the US economy during the 19th and 20th centuries.

America’s first dollar was actually from Spain and their New World territories. The Spanish Reale or “Pieces of 8” were the established currency for trade. It was regarded as the most solid from of currency as the silver content was the most trusted of many of the currencies used in our infant country as well as many trading partners, particularly China.

A brief pictorial history of United States half cents, large cents and small cents. Minted from copper, copper/nickel, bronze (copper, tin and zinc), copper and zinc depending on the years.

Starting from the top from left to right.

1st two rows we have:
Classic Head Half Cent, Liberty Cap Large Cent, Draped Bust Large Cent, Classic Head Large Cent.

3rd and 4th row we have:

Young Head Large Cent, Flying Eagle Small Cent, Indian Head Small Cent,
Lincoln Type Wheat Ear Reverse Small Cent and Lincoln Type Memorial Reverse Small Cent.

Mintages from these varieties depend on the type and years. During the first years of the Philadelphia Mint, the mint produced a few thousand pieces while today the amount of Lincoln pennies minted are in the billions.

The first year of the Morgan dollar series revealed a miscue on the part of our mint. The reverse of the 1878 Morgan had our nation’s symbol, The Bald Eagle with 8 tail feathers. A few months into 1878, some folks informed the mint that the Bald Eagle has only 7 tail feathers. So the 8 tailed variety of the Morgan dollar was short lived. The other 1878 varieties are numerous and we can discuss these at a later time. So the 8 tail feathered variety has a smaller mintage (750,000) than the 7 tail feathered variety (9.759 million). And of course this is reflected in its numismatic value being higher. Shown below is the 8 tail feather Morgan which has been highly toned.

1802 Draped Bust Heraldic Eagle. Only 41,650 minted. Thomas Jefferson’s first term as President. A historic coin during the birth of our nation.

IMHO grades about F. You be the judge. (Photo included from ANA Grading Standards) Most likely cleaned at some point in her life. Not many of these around in this condition. Liberty and United States of America plainly visible, E Pluribus Unum has some wear.
