As American Indian Month begins in Minneapolis, we carry heavy hearts. Lives have been lost, and our community mourns deeply.

And yet—we rise.
We rise in prayer.
We rise in community.
We rise for our relatives.

All Nations Indian Church will be open today, May 1 after the prayers at Cedar Field.
The sacred fire will be burning. Sacred medicines available.
Come to pray, sit, or find comfort in community. We will have coffee, lemonade and snacks.

Elder’s Meditation of the Day April 3

“We know that in all creation, only the human family has strayed from the Sacred Way.”
–OJIBWA Prayer

How have we gotten so far off track? What has happened to us? What is happening to our family? How did it happen so quickly? Every individual needs to answer these questions for themselves. What do we need to do to start living the Sacred Way again? Pray! Today I will start praying. I pray the Creator will lead all Native People to a great healing. I pray we’ll be free from alcohol and drugs. I pray we will return to the culture, to spirituality and to unity.

My Mother, help us to heal ourselves. Make us strong again.

Our Story

Having struggled with his own sobriety, Ojibwe tribe member Juel Fairbanks Sr. had a dream to open a halfway house for Native American men. The Cass Lake, Minnesota native shared his vision with fellow Alcoholics Anonymous members, including Edward LaFromboise, who also believed that this type of program would speed the recovery process.

In 1970, they began meeting with others in the community about creating this culturally specific treatment and support program. Support grew for Juel Fairbanks Aftercare Residence. Unfortunately, Juel died before he could realize his dream. In his honor, Edward continued the work they began. On December 4, 1973, the first client was admitted to Juel Fairbanks Aftercare Residence. Juel Fairbanks Aftercare Residence operated as a Halfway House for American Indian Men. Edward LaFromboise served as the first director of the program until his death in 1977.

Over the years, the program evolved into much more. In 1976, the residential program became co-ed and began serving other underserved populations, ages 16 and up. In 1979, the outpatient program was added. In 1991, Juel Fairbanks started to offer chemical dependency assessments in Ramsey County.
