When he was just 18, he began working as a dairy farmer in Furnas, St. Michael, before making the courageous move to America. Not long after, he returned home to marry the love of his life, and together they built a beautiful marriage of 65 years. He worked for more than 36 years at Heridite Finishing Company, where he was known for his strong work ethic and loyalty. A proud member of the Academica Social Club, he enjoyed time with friends, cheering on his favorite soccer team, Benfica. He was a parishioner of St. Patrick’s Church in Somerset and loved fishing, but more than anything, he cherished time spent with his family, who were truly the center of his world.

Joao, affectionately known as "Couvinha," earned his nickname from his deep love for gardening and farming. He was a man of simple joys and a heart full of humor. He could often be found starting his day with a coffee at the Portuguese Athletic Club called Lindos, a place where he felt right at home. Couvinha found joy in life’s simple pleasures: the thrill of scratch tickets, the satisfaction of tending to his plants, and indulging in his favorite treats — whoppers and banana splits, which he lovingly called “big burgers” and “banana boats”. He was a very proud Portuguese veteran of the Air Force, having served his country with honor until his honorable discharge in 1967. Joao’s presence will be greatly missed, but his love for life, his family, and the earth he tended will always be remembered.
