Sun Protection
Outdoor activities are extremely important for all children. Children however, are at higher risk from sun exposure due to their thinner skin, regardless of their skin type. Effective sun protection, including the use of sunscreens is crucial in preventing long term skin damage. Some helpful recommendations include:
1. Avoiding midday sun exposure (10 am to 4 pm) when UV rays are strongest. Schedule outdoor activities for early morning or late afternoon when possible
2. Use protective clothing such as hats with full brims and long-sleeved shirts and pants
3. Apply sunscreens (SPF: 30-50), 30 minutes before sun exposure, and reapply every 2-3 hours. The best sunscreens are broad spectrum offering both UVA and UVB protection and contain physical UV filters such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. Ensure the sunscreen is water resistant for up to 80 minutes if the child will be swimming.
4. Seek Shade whenever possible.
It is important to remember that infants under six months of age should avoid direct sun exposure and use protective clothing and shade instead of sunscreens.
