RSV Bronchiolitis

Thousands of infants and young children are hospitalized with RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) infection each year. Babies can now be protected by either a maternal vaccine (Abrysvo) given during pregnancy at least two weeks before delivery or by getting a monoclonal antibody (Beyfortus/Nirsemab) given in the first 8 months of life during the RSV season. This has reduced the risks of hospitalization due to RSV infection by more than 80%.

Sun Protection

Outdoor activities are extremely important for all children. Children however, are at higher risk from sun exposure due to their thinner skin, regardless of their skin type. Effective sun protection, including the use of sunscreens is crucial in preventing long term skin damage. Some helpful recommendations include:

1. Avoiding midday sun exposure (10 am to 4 pm) when UV rays are strongest. Schedule outdoor activities for early morning or late afternoon when possible
2. Use protective clothing such as hats with full brims and long-sleeved shirts and pants
3. Apply sunscreens (SPF: 30-50), 30 minutes before sun exposure, and reapply every 2-3 hours. The best sunscreens are broad spectrum offering both UVA and UVB protection and contain physical UV filters such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. Ensure the sunscreen is water resistant for up to 80 minutes if the child will be swimming.
4. Seek Shade whenever possible.

It is important to remember that infants under six months of age should avoid direct sun exposure and use protective clothing and shade instead of sunscreens.

Whooping cough (pertussis):

We have seen a sharp spike in whooping cough cases across the nation, with the tragic loss of two infants recently. This is in addition to the death of two children from measles and over 150 children from the flu illness this season alone. These heart breaking events underscore the critical importance of timely vaccinations according to the recommended schedule. Vaccinations remain the most effective measure to prevent these devastating diseases and protect the health and the well being of our children and communities.

Dr. Lisa Kelly will be leaving Northern Virginia Pediatric Associates "NVPA" in February. Dr. Kelly has been with NVPA for almost 20 years, and has so loved being able to care for her patients that she has continued to come to Falls Church from her home in Warrenton, VA. After logging tens of thousands of miles on I-66, Dr. Kelly will be leaving NVPA in mid-February and will be joining a pediatric office in her hometown of Warrenton. We will all miss her. Please, join me in wishing her the very best as she “jumps into” this next chapter!

Myopia in Children:

Almost 35% of all children worldwide have myopia a new study showed. This number is expected to rise over the next several years. Nearsightedness, or myopia, refers to when closer objects are clear but distant ones are blurry.

The rise in myopia in children is attributed to more screen time including television, video and computer games. It is highly recommended that children spend less time on the screen and more time doing outdoor activities. If on the screen, they should be encouraged to follow the 20-20-20 rule (take 20 seconds breaks every 20 minutes to look at objects at least 20 feet away).

Happy 4th of July

On behalf of our entire office, we want to wish you and your families a fun, safe and a healthy holiday. We are proud you are part of our NVPA family.

Summer safety tips:

1. Limit sun exposure during the peak hours (10 am to 4 pm).
2. Select light weight, light colored and preferably cotton clothes whenever possible and use a wide-brimmed hat
3. Babies under six months of age should be kept out of direct sunlight
4. Apply sunscreen on exposed body parts and reapply every two hours if your child is sweating or swimming. It is best to apply the sunscreen at least 20 minutes before you head out.
5. Choose sunscreen that offers UVA and UVB protection and has an SPF of 30-45. Please, remember to apply sunscreen even on cloudy days
6. Sunglasses with UV protection help protect the eyes
7. It is better to stay inside or limit outdoor activities to less than 30 minutes when it is 90 degrees or above and humid
7. Make sure your child drinks plenty of fluids even if they are not thirsty. Water is the best fluid.

Measles:
CDC health officials are warning doctors about the dramatic rise in measles cases around the world. Measles vaccine, part of the MMR vaccine, is typically given in two dose at 12-15 months and 4-6 years of age. Families traveling to countries affected by measles are advised to give the first dose as early as six months of age. Please, talk to your pediatrician if you are traveling abroad.

Measles is a highly contagious viral illness characterized by fever, cough, malaise and conjunctivitis followed by a diffuse rash that typically begins on the head and face and spreads downward. Complications of measles include diarrhea and dehydration, pneumonia and encephalitis (brain infection).
