Do you have pain or tightness in your anterior hip and thigh? This technique might be what youโ€™re missing. Hip Maltracking often occurs due to micro-trauma from postural hip extension or an anterior displaced femoral head. The three clinical tests used to diagnose a maltracking hip are: an abduction/ER pattern of movement when passively moving the hip into flexion, a stiff posterior hip evidenced by a loss of Hip IR at 90 degrees of flexion but not in hip extension, and a weak posterior hip when testing hip External Rotation in a shortened position. If these three elements exist, after ruling out safety contraindications, a hip manipulation technique may prove helpful in reflexively decreasing the hypertonic posterior hip. This will likely allow for improved hip tracking. Be sure to follow this manipulation with a rebalancing program focused on the posterior hip. If this sounds like you, call one of our clinics to have an evaluation completed.

Follow along with our Falls Church PT, Matt Stitzlein, as he breaks down essential components to improve your golf swing! ๐ŸŒ๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธโ›ณ๏ธ

To quote the legendary coach Chubbs, โ€œItโ€™s all in the hipsโ€. The hip hinge is a foundational movement in the golf swing, but also for general low back health. Any time we are lifting from the floor, we are using some degree of hip hinging. With benefits both on and off the course, try some of these exercises to train your hip hinging in order to promote a more efficient swing, and keep your low back in good shape throughout the golf season.

RDL 3x10
Holding a Dumbbell or Kettlebell, think about pushing your hips/butt back as far as you can to create the โ€œhip hingeโ€, at a certain point you may feel tightness in the hamstrings, at this point it is okay to let the knees bend until the weight reaches the floor. Once you have contacted the floor, reverse the movement and return to a full standing position. You should feel the glutes, low back and hamstrings all working/firing during this movement.

Staggered Stance RDL, 3x5 each side
With the feet staggered, proceed to bend forward to the touch down to your front foot. You should feel like your weight is primarily on the lead leg/foot, and should feel a stretch in the lead glute/hamstring. Proceed to then reverse the motion and return to the starting position. If balance is a concern, have a hand resting on a wall or chair for additional support.

Good mornings 3x8
With a barbell positioned on the back, proceed to hinge at the hips like with the RDL shown earlier, be very mindful to not let the low back round through the motion as you will miss out on the low back engagement we are trying to strengthen. Return to the starting position. The placement of the barbell helps to get some additional low back extensor engagement so this exercise can be a good progression from the traditional RDL.
