Meet Trevor, a true heart warrior! 💙

Trevor, a twin, was born prematurely with a rare form of tetralogy of Fallot with discontinuous pulmonary arteries, a condition that limits blood flow to the lungs. From his very first days, he proved he was a true fighter! 👶✨

Diagnosed before birth with this complex congenital heart condition, Trevor’s family was able to prepare for the journey ahead with the support of the expert, compassionate, and dedicated team at Inova Children’s Heart Center. 👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️

After he was born, Trevor remained in the hospital, growing stronger each day, supported by his parents and care team. After two long months, he underwent open‑heart surgery. Following 96 days in the hospital, Trevor was finally able to go home — reunited with his loving family and his twin brother, Kyle. It was a moment filled with joy, relief, and hope. 🏠💞🌈

Trevor continues to inspire everyone around him with his resilience and determination. 💖🦁 His story is one of courage, love, and the incredible power of a devoted family and care team working together. 🙌

Meet Lucas, our local rockstar! 🌟✨

Lucas, who was born with Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome), conquered a major milestone at Inova L.J. Murphy Children’s Hospital: heart surgery to repair his Complete Atrioventricular Canal (CAVC) defect. ❤️🩹

For kiddos like Lucas, CAVC is a common but intricate challenge where the center of the heart hasn't formed correctly and impacts how blood flows through it. Our incredible pediatric surgical team worked their magic to:
🛠️ Patch the holes in both the upper and lower chambers (ASD and VSD).
🔄 Reconstruct the single, shared valve into two separate, properly working valves

We are thrilled to report that Lucas' heart is now pumping exactly as it should. 💓 He has shown incredible resilience and is already back to his cheerful, active self! 🏃️💨

Watching Lucas' recovery reminds us why we do what we do. He is a testament to the fact that children with T21 can overcome huge hurdles, especially with a loving family and dedicated care team by their side. 👨👩👦
Our nurses, physicians, and specialists always look forward to seeing him! His parents rave that he “is the light of our house, and brings love, smiles and the best hugs to everyone!” 🤗✨

Ransom was born with Hypoplastic Right Heart Syndrome (HRHS), a rare congenital heart defect where the right side of the heart is underdeveloped. For Ransom, this meant navigating the complexities of a single ventricle condition — a journey that requires incredible strength from both the patient and their family.

✨ Under the expert care of our Single Ventricle Program, Ransom has bravely conquered both surgery and cardiac catheterization procedures. 🎂 As he nears his second birthday, we're thrilled that he is doing wonderfully!

Caring for children like Ransom involves a dedicated multidisciplinary team — from surgeons and cardiologists to our specialized home monitoring and nutrition experts 🩺🍎 — all working together to ensure our smallest patients have the brightest futures. 👨‍⚕️👩‍⚕️

We are thrilled to share an update on Sarah, a brave young patient who is approaching the one‑year heart‑a‑versary of her double aortic arch surgery at Inova L.J. Murphy Children’s Hospital. 💙

A double aortic arch is a rare congenital heart condition in which two branches of the aorta wrap around the trachea (airway 💨) or esophagus (feeding tube 🍼). This can cause symptoms such as difficulty breathing, noisy breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Sarah’s condition was discovered somewhat coincidentally after she had a chest X‑ray to evaluate breathing‑related symptoms. While a chest X-ray isn’t the typical way this condition is diagnosed, the expertise and keen eye of the radiologist reviewing the X‑ray led to suspicion of a double aortic arch.

Sarah was then referred to the cardiology team at Inova for further evaluation and testing, including an echocardiogram and a CT scan of her chest, which confirmed the diagnosis 🖥️✨. She went on to have heart surgery to correct the condition, and we’re happy to share that her surgery was an absolute success! ✅

Sarah has recovered beautifully, and the breathing and swallowing symptoms she experienced over the past several years have completely resolved. She continues to show us all what it means to be a true . We are so honored to be part of her journey and can’t wait to see all the amazing things she’ll do next. 🌟✨

Today we’re celebrating Cora, a vibrant 5-year-old who has been a part of our Inova Children's Heart Center family since before her birth! 🙌

🤰 During pregnancy, Cora's family learned she would need special care for her heart. Cora was diagnosed with a complex congenital heart lesion with a single ventricle condition, which meant that one only chamber of her heart was pumping blood through her heart and lungs. The Inova Children’s Fetal Care team counseled the family extensively, and our heart center team was more than prepared for Cora’s arrival 🏥💕.

Cora has shown incredible bravery, going through several procedures and surgeries, all helping her heart do its important work. ❤️

Children like Cora need ongoing heart care as they grow, and she’s been surrounded by a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, cardiologists, and nurses who specialize in complex congenital heart care and cheer her on at every milestone. 🩺✨

Now Cora is doing wonderfully — bringing her trademark energy to everything she does! We are so proud of the resilience she and her family show every day.

❤️ Meet Lamia Y., RDCS (AE, PE), a pediatric cardiac sonographer at Inova Children's. Lamia joined us four months ago and loves being a part of the pediatric cardiac team.

💬 "What I love most about my work is knowing that the images I obtain play a critical role in diagnosing and caring for children with congenital heart disease," she said.

Fun fact: Lamia spends her workdays focused on pediatric hearts – and her evenings negotiating with two toddler boys.
