Whether you’re navigating anxiety, identity, relationships, or just trying to understand yourself on a deeper level therapy is a place where you don’t have to perform, explain, or prove anything. You get to show up as you are. So if you’ve been waiting for the “right” time to start therapy, this might be it not because you’re broken, but because you’re ready to grow.

Mental health is a popular topic on social media. And because mental health care can often be inaccessible for a number of reasons (finances, insurance barriers, location, family/community culture, etc.) that can be a great thing. Talking about mental health openly can help to destigmatize the need for care, and to normalize the idea that we all have things to work on But there are dangers to relying exclusively on social media for mental health care! In fact, some of the most powerful growth happens when we give ourselves permission to slow down and check in with how we’re really doing. Therapy can help you make sense of the internal noise, develop a stronger relationship with yourself, and break out of patterns that no longer serve you. It’s not about having all the answers but i about creating space to ask the questions that matter.

Seeking therapy for the first time can feel intimidating especially if you’re the “strong one,” the fixer, or the person everyone else turns to. Maybe you’ve been taught that therapy is only for moments of crisis, or perhaps you grew up in a culture where emotional struggles were minimized, or met with silence. As a first-generation Latina and mental health professional, I understand how deeply those messages can run. But I want you to know this: therapy isn’t just for when things fall apart. It’s also for when you’re trying to hold it all together.

Emotional regulation itself refers to the ability to manage your emotional reactions. Essentially, it’s just slowing down and thinking before you act. Our emotions can offer us important information about ourselves–what is important to us, what we feel vulnerable about, how we relate to others around us, etc.–but they don’t often reflect the objective truth. Practicing emotional regulation allows you to both honor your feelings by giving you a chance to reflect on them and what they’re telling you about yourself, while not letting your behavior be ruled by them.

Emotional regulation takes intention and practice, don’t get discouraged if it’s not something that comes naturally to you. Working with a therapist can give you more ways to regulate your emotions and feel like your old self again. Get in touch with our office today to set up an appointment!
