Allowing someone to see, in real time, your relationship during the good, the bad, and everything in between, is incredibly vulnerable and intimate and I never forget the privilege I have to be a part of these moments. Having an outside perspective and someone trained in identifying sticky patterns that are negatively impacting your relationship may be just what you need to move towards a healthier and more open relationship. Give yourself a chance and try a consultation call or an intake and be honest with your clinician about your hesitancy and nervousness; I would happily discuss these questions and assuage any fears that I can!

These rituals may bring temporary relief. But over time, they train the brain to associate doubt with danger and compulsions with safety. The more someone tries to feel certain, the more uncertain they feel. That’s why it’s not as simple as “just stop” or trying to convince someone that the thoughts are not rational. Often, people have tried to stop and to rationalize or ritual their way out of this cycle for years before seeking treatment.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is often misunderstood as being about cleanliness or liking things labeled and arranged a certain way. In reality, OCD is defined by:

Obsessions: intrusive, unwanted thoughts, images, or urges

Compulsions: repetitive behaviors or mental acts (rituals) done to reduce anxiety caused by those thoughts

OCD has some common themes (harm, moral scrupulosity, contamination, sexual, false memory, just right, etc.), but it isn’t really about germs, morality, or safety. At its core, it’s about an intense intolerance of uncertainty.

At Hope + Wellness, during walk and talk therapy sessions, we walk through quiet neighborhoods, trails near the office, or public parks. We can take breaks to sit and talk if needed, or discuss the features we see to integrate them into your session. We still take great care to maintain privacy during our discussions so you can get the benefits of a traditional therapy session while accessing the benefits of nature and movement.

When that's all set, it's time for your initial consultation session!

During this initial consultation session, you’ll meet with your therapist and get an initial sense of what it would be like to work together. On your end, you’ll be able to see if it feels like a good fit for you, and on our end, we’ll be able to see if we would be the therapist to best help you. This initial consultation session is different from typical therapy sessions as we'll be gathering information on what brings you to therapy and begin to explore potential goals.
