In early September of last year, a Spanish-speaking client, Elaina, came to our center. Her demeanor was very closed off . She reported she had not had a menstrual period in 4 months, but did not consider pregnancy until 2 weeks prior when she started experiencing what she thought might be pregnancy symptoms. She stated she had no family in the United States except for an Aunt with whom she worked with cleaning houses.
The father of the baby was no more than an acquaintance, and she did not plan to tell him she was pregnant. Before the ultrasound, she began to cry saying she did not want to be a mother. She was afraid, alone, and overwhelmed. Elaina was very abortion minded, but agreed to the ultrasound, in part because she did not know how far along she might be.
It was a surprise to all in the room when Kathy, the Nurse Sonographer, measured Elaina’s baby at 28 weeks gestation! Elaina was floored, crying and unbelieving, stating she had just started having symptoms and, again, repeating she did not think she could be a mother. At that time, we discussed that the baby was almost viable, and that perhaps, if she did not feel she could take care of a child, adoption would be a loving and courageous choice.
Kathy, our sonographer, has adopted 2 children of her own and was able to be an example of how beautiful Adoption can be.
It would be a choice that was loving to her, to the baby, and to a family who would be grateful for a chance to be parents. We helped her apply for medical insurance, gave her information on adoption and other resources, and kept in touch via text over the next few weeks.
In mid-November we received a note from Elaina. Baby Allison had been born 4 weeks early but healthy and beautiful. We were so grateful and invited them to come in for diapers and clothes. She agreed and came with a friend. Elaina was changed - she was serene and confident in motherhood. She kept looking at her beautiful little girl with what seemed like wonder. She smiled at the compliment that she was a ‘good momma” and seemed so very different from the first time she came to see us.
Her case is a demonstration of the power of hope and prayer. It is also a practical demonstration of the importance and power of ultrasound. Seeing her baby made her realize that she was already a mom. It also may have saved her from serious physical, psychological, and spiritual harm had she taken the abortion pills thinking she was in a very early pregnancy. This experience is yet another example of how we strive to love them both. Since then, Elaina has come back to Options every month for diapers and supplies, and many more hugs.
It is thanks to YOU, our donors, that we are able to support women like Elaina before giving birth AND after. Please consider supporting our ministry by visiting our Amazon Wish List. We are running low on some items that our clients would greatly benefit from!
