Meet Dr. Melinda Kelly, Medical Director of Hope in Northern Virginia and Options Care Center. Dr. Kelly was introduced to our ministry by a friend at church, who thought she may be a good fit to oversee the new medical component of the ministry. In 2020, Dr. Kelly partnered with Hope’s first Nurse Manager, Blair Smith, to create a Policies and Procedures manual; a labor of love that Dr. Kelly will always remember. Dr. Kelly has seen the Lord move in our centers in more than one way, but her favorite is a story she recounts involving another nurse sonographer. A woman in need of support came to our center, and discovered she was pregnant with TWINS! The Lord works in mysterious ways, and knew that our center was crucial to the support system of this young mom. Outside of serving as our Medical Director, Dr. Kelly is the Chief Health Officer of an international Christian nonprofit, which is where she met her husband, a Filipino pastor. Dr. Kelly leads teams in the Philippines, Guatemala, Uganda, Burundi, Cambodia, and the Hope Nova team.

A new study has shown that the abortion pill is 22 times more dangerous than previously reported by the FDA. When a woman visits our center in a crisis, our priority is to ensure that she makes an educated decision about her pregnancy.
That includes sharing the TRUTH about the dangers of the abortion pill. An astounding 10.9% of women experience sepsis, infection, hemorrhaging, or another serious adverse event within 45 days of a mifepristone abortion.

Please help us share the TRUTH about the abortion pill by sending this post to someone you know, sharing our post to your personal page, or by making a small donation on our website to help us continue to spread TRUTH to the women who visit our centers.

In early September of last year, a Spanish-speaking client, Elaina, came to our center. Her demeanor was very closed off . She reported she had not had a menstrual period in 4 months, but did not consider pregnancy until 2 weeks prior when she started experiencing what she thought might be pregnancy symptoms. She stated she had no family in the United States except for an Aunt with whom she worked with cleaning houses.

The father of the baby was no more than an acquaintance, and she did not plan to tell him she was pregnant. Before the ultrasound, she began to cry saying she did not want to be a mother. She was afraid, alone, and overwhelmed. Elaina was very abortion minded, but agreed to the ultrasound, in part because she did not know how far along she might be.

It was a surprise to all in the room when Kathy, the Nurse Sonographer, measured Elaina’s baby at 28 weeks gestation! Elaina was floored, crying and unbelieving, stating she had just started having symptoms and, again, repeating she did not think she could be a mother. At that time, we discussed that the baby was almost viable, and that perhaps, if she did not feel she could take care of a child, adoption would be a loving and courageous choice.

Kathy, our sonographer, has adopted 2 children of her own and was able to be an example of how beautiful Adoption can be.

It would be a choice that was loving to her, to the baby, and to a family who would be grateful for a chance to be parents. We helped her apply for medical insurance, gave her information on adoption and other resources, and kept in touch via text over the next few weeks.

In mid-November we received a note from Elaina. Baby Allison had been born 4 weeks early but healthy and beautiful. We were so grateful and invited them to come in for diapers and clothes. She agreed and came with a friend. Elaina was changed - she was serene and confident in motherhood. She kept looking at her beautiful little girl with what seemed like wonder. She smiled at the compliment that she was a ‘good momma” and seemed so very different from the first time she came to see us.

Her case is a demonstration of the power of hope and prayer. It is also a practical demonstration of the importance and power of ultrasound. Seeing her baby made her realize that she was already a mom. It also may have saved her from serious physical, psychological, and spiritual harm had she taken the abortion pills thinking she was in a very early pregnancy. This experience is yet another example of how we strive to love them both. Since then, Elaina has come back to Options every month for diapers and supplies, and many more hugs.

It is thanks to YOU, our donors, that we are able to support women like Elaina before giving birth AND after. Please consider supporting our ministry by visiting our Amazon Wish List. We are running low on some items that our clients would greatly benefit from!

Meet Lisa Giboney, our Nurse Manager. Lisa came to our team in June of 2024 after working in a similar role at another pregnancy center. She serves our ministry as not only our Nurse Manager, but also as a Nurse Sonographer showing the miracle of LIFE to our clients.

Lisa has seen so many wonderful blessings in our center, but her favorite is her time spend with a 16-year old client last year, who came to our center seeking an abortion. An Ultrasound revealed she was 30 weeks along. The client was still considering abortion, so Lisa sent he home with information about adoption, and asked that the client follow up if she had any questions. A few days later, Lisa received a text on our Center Text Line with good news - the client chose LIFE for her baby! She made the courageous decision to choose adoption for her child. This was a powerful moment in Lisa’s first year with our Ministry. It’s the reason she chooses to work with us. God is present and always working!

If you’d like to support the amazing work Lisa and the rest of our team are carrying out in our centers, we ask that you consider visiting our Amazon Wish List! Our goal is to be fully stocked on items as we head into summer, so that we are able to bless every mom who chooses LIFE with the essentials she needs.

Jenna and her 19-month-old daughter, Rachel, first came to Hope for an ultrasound. Her partner, Allen, was encouraging Jenna to choose abortion, but she hoped he would change his mind after seeing the ultrasound. But, Allen was not responsive. He was silent on the drive home, unwilling to engage with Jenna.

That same day, he forced her to take 4 unmarked pills, sticking his fingers in her mouth to force it open. He then left the house, slept in his car, and drove to Florida. Turns out, Allen forced abortion pills down Jenna’s throat. Jenna was alone, afraid, and in pain.

She returned to our center in need of counseling. The conversation lasted almost two hours; she was disheveled and tear-stained, crying repeatedly while recounting the trauma. A Hope Counselor discussed the need for help and support - especially from women who have had similar experiences. She was given a list of after-abortion support groups, and was informed about the Justice Foundation and the Center Against Forced Abortions because what happened to her is illegal - assault. She took that information, as well as information on emergency services and housing available in her area. Even in the face of extreme trauma and abuse, Jenna was met with love and support and encouragement in our center.

While our primary goal is to encourage women to choose LIFE, Jenna’s story is familiar to many. Life after abortion is filled with complex emotions, many of which Abortion Clinics do not discuss or provide resources for. Our mission at Hope in Northern Virginia is to educate women on all aspects of abortion, and to support women like Jenna who are the victim of assault leading to abortion.

Today, we ask for you to pray for Jenna. Pray that she will find Hope in the Lord and continue to seek refuge in His goodness.

We also thank you for supporting our mission - without you, Jenna would still be struggling… alone. It is because of the generosity of donors like YOU that Jenna can heal from this terrible event, and find comfort in Jesus.

Meet Mikki, our Community Development Coordinator. Mikki has been with Hope in Nova for 2 years, and focuses on developing church relationships, donor communications, and just revamped our website! Mikki was first introduced to our ministry through MaryBeth, who inspired Mikki to get involved. She was moved by the heart of Hope’s mission - supporting women with truth, love, and practical help.

One of Mikki’s favorite memories during her time with Hope in Nova is the amazing generosity of the baby bottle drive. Watching churches and donors come together to support LIFE was a beautiful reminder that the Body of Christ is active and compassionate, and that God is at work even through the smallest acts of giving.

When worry starts to creep in, Mikki finds solitude in Philippians 4:6 - “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”

If you’re interested in partnering with our ministry, Mikki would love to connect with you! Without the support of our Churches and community, we would not be able to carry out our mission. It is because of people like YOU that we are able to spread God’s word to women in need of support.

Meet Selene, our Community Liaison and Client Advocate! Selene became part of our amazing group of volunteers in 2023 when she was in Law School. She always knew the importance of Crisis Pregnancy Centers in her community, and spent her free time volunteering on a periodic basis. She loved connecting with staff and other volunteers. She recognized that Crisis Pregnancy Centers were “uniquely persecuted”, and it was her desire to let the volunteers and staff of Hope in Nova know that she would always support the amazing work they were doing by volunteering when she could, however the ministry needed.

Selene has many testimonies of the way God is working within our Center, but her favorite is a story about a woman who we will call “Christine”. “Christine” called Options Care Center frantic, sharing that she had been to the center before with her boyfriend, but since their last visit her boyfriend decided to leave her. She didn’t know what to do. Alone and afraid, she reached out to Options for help. Selene could tell God was present during this call - Selene answered the phone at the perfect time, when a woman was struggling to have Faith and was in need of Crisis Counseling.

Selene trusted in the Lord to speak through her and was able to lead “Christine” to a place of peace - ultimately “Christine” chose LIFE for her baby!

Want to get involved with Hope in Nova, and help more mothers like “Christine” choose life? You can learn more about our ministry by visiting https://hopeinnova.org/support-us/. Without the amazing work of volunteers and staff like Selene, and without YOUR support, this life saving work would not be possible.
