A client said something to me today that stopped me in my tracks.
She’s 50 years old.
And when she was growing up, women still couldn’t open credit cards or apply for loans without a husband.
That’s not ancient history.
That’s our mothers. Our grandmothers. Ourselves.
For most of history, women faced legal and societal restrictions that made owning businesses, property, or even accessing credit nearly impossible. Married women were often treated as being under the legal authority of their husbands, unable to sign contracts or control assets independently.
As recently as 1974, women in the U.S. could be denied credit or loans without a male co-signer.
And it wasn’t until 1988, with the Women’s Business Ownership Act — that women were guaranteed equal access to business loans.
That’s within our lifetime.
Today, Fleurish Medical Aesthetics + Wellness is proudly owned and led by two women, two mothers… myself and Keri.
That fact feels especially meaningful when you pause and realize how recently women were excluded from power, ownership, and autonomy.
Fifty years ago, women were still fighting to be heard.
Today, we build. We lead. We own, while simultaneously raising families.
And fifty years from now, the bar will be even higher, because it has to be.
This year has made it abundantly clear that progress is not guaranteed. For women or for any marginalized community. Strength, visibility, and solidarity still matter.
We honor how far we’ve come.
And we stay committed to where we’re going.
Happy International Women’s Day 💗 If they can, we can.
