Do not judge a child by their behavior.

Too often, “good” behavior is simply a fear-based response to coercive parenting.

But is “good” behavior truly good when it arises from fear?

When their bodies and nervous systems are being flooded with stress hormones because they are afraid of being hurt, punished, yelled at, and threatened?

Well-behaved children who live under threat and violence aren’t “obedient.” They are FAWNING as a survival strategy.

When adults use fear as a tool of control, we condition children to be easily manipulated, mindlessly compliant, and overly submissive—they doubt their own power and struggle to speak truth to power.

We must remember that there is no fear in love.

Let us lay aside the tools of fear and control.

Let’s raise children who trust in their inherent goodness and know how to make “good trouble” (John Lewis), not children who perform goodness to stay out of trouble.
