Most protein bars are junk. Yes — even the ones labeled 'healthy.'

When patients tell me they’re 'snacking smart,'
I often see a protein bar in their hand. But
here’s the catch: many of these bars are
nothing more than candy wrapped in health
claims.

So here are the 3 rules I follow when choosing a protein bar:

1️. It must have at least 15g of protein from
a real source (like whey isolate, egg whites,
or beef protein — not hydrolyzed soy).

2️. Less than 6g of sugar — and no artificial
sweeteners. Aspartame, sucralose, or sugar
alcohols like malitol or erythritol wreak havoc
on gut health. Instead, look for stevia, monk
fruit, or dates.

3️. The ingredient list should be simple and
recognizable. If it sounds like a high school
chemistry project, I don’t eat it.

Because if it doesn’t pass those 3 rules,
it’s not fuel — it’s fake health.
