Happiest of New Years, fellow Creative Spirits! We hope that 2024 has a realm of new possibilities for you and those you love.
I (Emily!) have never been big on New Years resolutions or goals. I always get fed up or set myself up for failure...or feel shame at the end of the year if I hadn't lived up to what I set out to do. Usually those come up at 2:00 in the morning when I'm frustrated with something in my life.
Several years ago I was introduced to the idea of setting an intention. This has been so much more productive for me. It's also been a lot less shame inducing. Check out this great exercise and meditation for choosing a word of the year! May your days be merry and bright!

Creative Spirit believes in celebrating all month long! Did you know that there are soooo many more celebrations in December than Christmas?!
The week-long holiday of Kwanzaa honors African-American heritage; it’s a cultural holiday as opposed to a religious one.

Black nationalist Maulana Karenga created Kwanzaa in 1966 as a way to unite the African-American community following the Watts Rebellion in a predominantly Black Los Angeles neighborhood. An uprising against systemic racism began after a white California highway patrol officer arrested a young Black man for drunken driving. The rebellion led to 34 deaths—two-thirds of which were individuals shot by police or National Guard troops, per the Associated Press. It also resulted in more than 1,000 injuries.
Karenga laid out seven key principles for Kwanzaa: unity; self-determination; collective responsibility; cooperative economics; purpose; creativity; and faith. Its name comes from the Swahili phrase “matunda ya kwanza,” which translates to “first fruits.” Kwanzaa celebrations draw from African musical and storytelling traditions.

Founded by the Prophet Zoroaster more than 3,000 years ago, Zoroastrianism is one of the world’s oldest monotheistic religions. Zoroastrians honor the death of their prophet on this day, typically by visiting a fire temple and offering prayers.

Christians celebrate Christmas largely to commemorate the birth of Jesus. But the festival has also been adopted as a secular family holiday by people of all faiths. It’s marked by an exchange of gifts as well as excitement for the arrival of Santa Claus.

Creative Spirit honors and celebrates all faiths and religions! Did you know there are SOOOO many more celebrations in December than Christmas?!

Wiccans and Neo-Pagans celebrate the winter solstice (the darkest day of the year, on Dec. 21) through the festival of Yule. The winter solstice marks the shortest day and longest night of the year; Yule celebrates the re-emergence of the sun and the days beginning to grow longer again. The festival was first celebrated in Scandinavia as a Norse festival.

A common tradition is burning the yule log, which originally was done to celebrate the sun’s return. It has since also been folded into a Christmas tradition. In fact, Yule became associated with Christmas in the 9th century, although some still stick to the original Yule celebrations.

The eight-day Jewish holiday of Hanukkah begins Dec. 18. A central part of the Jewish Festival of Lights entails the lighting of a nine-branched menorah each night. (The ninth candle is used to light the others.) The ritual symbolizes how one day’s worth of oil miraculously lasted for eight days during a battle between a small group of Jewish people and the powerful Greek-Syrian army in 165 B.C. Per Jewish tradition, they are said to have emerged victorious and reclaimed the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.
Customary foods include latkes (potato pancakes), sufganiyot (jam-filled donuts) and brisket. Children often play with a dreidel (a spinning top with Hebrew letters).

Mexicans and Mexican-Americans often celebrate the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patron saint of Mexico who symbolizes patriotism and devotion.

Millions of pilgrims typically visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in December to celebrate the festival, which marks one of several apparitions of the Virgin Mary that some Catholic believers say was witnessed by an Indigenous Mexican man in 1531.

The Virgin Mary’s face is abundant in Mexico—in homes, shops and shrines.

When Creative Spirit opened we made a call to the wild ones. The ones who felt like they were too much and never enough all at once. A Message from Emily:
This week Creative Spirit turns 3! It has been the honor of my life to watch my little ember turn into a flame. While we celebrate this awesome milestone, changes have been taking place within the practice. After serving as a therapist in our community for the last several years I have decided to take a step back from direct therapy practice. This decision was not made lightly and great care went into my decision making.

So does this mean? Well, quite simply it means that I'm turning the reins of therapy over to the other amazing therapists at CSC! Hannah, Lynae, and Kaitlyn are fantastic therapists who will continue to bring healing to all of our amazing clients. As of today, all of my clients have been notified and have begun making their transitions in whatever way is best for them.

Over the last several weeks I have had the immense honor to share the fears of this transition and to honor the tremendous work I have had the privilege of witnessing. Not long after I opened Creative Spirit, I wrote a post entitled "I Cried for You Today" as an ode to my clients. Today, and over the last couple of weeks, I have had the opportunity to cry WITH my clients over this change. Sometimes the right things aren't always the easy ones. I just want to say a tremendous thank you to every colleague and client who has placed their trust and faith in me and my little ember that has turned into a huge flame. I am so grateful to you all. ❤️

Topid of the Week: Transition

Dr. Stephan Porges’ Polyvagal Theory explains humankind retained its Survival Instinct as a protective mechanism. Children that experience unmediated trauma often experience neural dysregulation. Children grow into adults. Humans naturally seek co-regulation from social encounters but if there were no safe relationships or environments, we learned to distrust change. Being asked to transition requires our minds and body to enter into a state of discomfort while our Survival Instinct is screeching an alarm. Resisting transitions is a protective mechanism developed from unsafe change that resulted in trauma. Individuals who enter a neural regulated state can be success with transitions and change.
