Meet Team Canopy! Q&A with Michaela Swanston!

Q: What do you do at Canopy?
A: I am the nurse, Nutrition Coach, and the resident fitness nerd. As an RN, BSN my primary focus is on providing comprehensive and compassionate care to our patients. A significant aspect of my role includes offering educational support and maintaining open communication with patients about their ongoing care. Additionally, I provide personalized nutrition coaching, taking a holistic approach to assist clients in achieving their unique health and wellness goals.

Q: What is the best part of your job?
A: The opportunity to create a safe haven for our patients, particularly those who have faced marginalization or felt unsafe in various situations. Being able to provide a space for patients where they can talk openly, feel comfortable, be heard, and be cared for is incredibly rewarding. Witnessing the positive progress and transformation of our patients at the clinic is truly heartwarming. Every patient brings a unique perspective, and learning from their experiences is a constant source of inspiration.

Q: Why should someone come to see you at Canopy?
A: You deserve empathetic and attentive care. Choosing to see me or coming to Canopy in general is an investment in your well-being. As an experienced RN with a BSN degree, I provide more than just medical care – I (and the team at Canopy) offer compassion and a holistic approach to health. Every patient deserves to be treated with respect and to have their health addressed from all angles. In addition to my nursing expertise, I also serve as a Nutrition Coach, tailoring guidance to help individuals achieve their unique health and wellness goals.

Q: If you could send your teenage self a piece of advice, what would you say?
A: Know that you are good enough. You are worthy. Try to surround yourself with people that you want to be around, want you to succeed, and want you to be healthy. And be that for your crew as well.

Q: What are your favorite self-care activities?
A: I MIGHT take a bath almost every night, taking time out of a busy day to work out/stretch/walk, therapy, and for a special treat- a massage!

Meet Team Canopy! Q&A with Clare Palmer!

Q: What do you do at Canopy?
A: I’m the Office Manager – you’ll see me at the front desk, I’m usually the one answering the phone and responding to emails and I am sometimes the one creating social media content!

Q: What is the best part of your job?
A: Being a part of the work Canopy is doing means the world to me. It’s incredible to work somewhere that has values that align with my own and a mission I wholeheartedly believe in. Helping create a supportive, welcoming, and safe environment for our patients is absolutely the best part of my job.

Q: Why should someone come to see you at Canopy?
A: If you need to pick up Plan B, just stop in and mention it to me! I’m also here to help you schedule appointments, whether you want to stop in or call.

Today is the Transgender Day of Remembrance, which serves to honor those whose lives have been lost due to anti-trans violence.

“Transgender Day of Remembrance seeks to highlight the losses we face due to anti-transgender bigotry and violence. I am no stranger to the need to fight for our rights, and the right to simply exist is first and foremost. With so many seeking to erase transgender people — sometimes in the most brutal ways possible — it is vitally important that those we lose are remembered, and that we continue to fight for justice.”
– Transgender Day of Remembrance founder Gwendolyn Ann Smith

For those who are looking to honor this day and all it means surrounded by community, there are a number of events happening across our region this evening.

Fargo/Moorhead - 7:00PM - Gaede State, MSUM
Bismarck - 5:00PM to 9:00PM - Kennedy Memorial Center
Grand Forks - 6:30PM to 9:00PM - Alerus Center

If you are aware of any others, we welcome you to promote them in our comments. Team Canopy is thankful to the individuals and organizations that have put their time and effort into organizing these events - the work you do is important and appreciated.

At 9:00PM, following traditional Transgender Day of Remembrance events, Faye Seidler will be hosting Transgender Night of Hope on Facebook Live. While this day can be a time of healing for some and serves to remember those we have lost, the event does focus on death, violence, and su***de that impacts trans, non-binary, and gender diverse communities and can lead to retraumatizing folks. Faye wanted to create a space that could build resiliency and hope going forward for both those who attend traditional events and those who can't, along with those who need warmth going into the winter months.

Save the date! In honor of World AIDS Day on December 1st, Canopy Medical will be providing FREE STI testing November 27th -30th during our regular business hours! Walk-Ins Welcome!

Meet Team Canopy! Q&A with Faye Seidler!

Q: What do you do at Canopy?
A: I'm the LGBTQ+ Care Coordinator and Peer Support Specialist. My primary role is to be an expert in everything related to transition that isn't a medical appointment. Whether that's legal name change, where to find surgeons, or a good place to buy binders, I'm there to help. I also serve as a peer support for individuals to just talk to someone who understands what it is like to be trans or non-binary and talk about long term goals.

Q: What is the best part of your job?
A: I work this job with great pride because I have become the change I wanted in healthcare. My entire transition process was a sharp experience, always on edge, feeling like I had to fight for my life. I do this work to give people some softness in medical care and make them feel safe as I can.

Q: Why should someone come to see you at Canopy?
A: There is so much non-sense online about being trans and it can be impossible to sort through what is authentic advice, myth, or trolling. I don't just have personal experience; I have ten years researching what it is to be gender diverse from a medical, cultural, sociological, and personal background. I can tell folks how things actually work or what we're not really sure on. I really just try to be an anchor to help give people the foundation to explore and understand themselves. People should come see me if they just feel like they need someone to talk to about being q***r.

Q: What do you collect?
A: Stuffed Turtles

Q: If you could have any one superpower, what would you choose?
A: Conditional Stasis Immortality - This means you cannot actually be damaged, not that you can survive anything and regenerate, but that you're effectively indestructible and don't age. However, this comes with an opt-out so you don't need to float through space for infinity.

Q: If you put together a music playlist to represent yourself or your life, what are three songs you would include?
A: Libera me from Hell - Gurren Lagann
Stronger than You - Steven Universe/Undertale Remix
Sons of Fate - Protomen

Meet Team Canopy! Q&A with Kara Gloe!

Q: What do you do at Canopy?
A: My title is Director of Mental Health Services. I am a mental health therapist (LMSW/LCISW). I provide mental health therapy. My primary populations include people living with HIV and the LGBTQIA2S+ community and serve a wide variety of people children through adulthood. I am also one of the program developers of the Canopy Peer Navigation Program, which is the first peer support program serving people living with HIV in North Dakota.

Q: What is the best part of your job?
A: Joining people in their journey as they heal, grow, and find more joy.

Q: Why should someone come to see you at Canopy?
A: You should see me at Canopy Medical Clinic because you deserve to feel happiness and self-worth. You deserve to have the coping tools necessary to navigate difficult situations as they arise without regrets or behaviors that spiral you into darker and darker places. You deserve an objective professional to help you challenge thoughts and beliefs that keep you from being your most authentic self and capturing your most authentic joy.

Q: If you could send your teenage self a piece of advice, what would you say?
A: Hold on. You are not too much, too loud, or too hard to handle. You’ll find your place, and there’s an entire community out there waiting to embrace you for exactly who you are.

Q: What do you collect?
A: Good memories. I try to tuck them deep into my heart, so when I need them, I always know where to find them.

Q: If you put together a music playlist to represent yourself or your life, what are three songs you would include?
A: “Here Comes the Sun” by the Beatles, “Sleeping Lessons” by The Shins, and “Superbloom” by MisterWives
