Our Caregiver Spotlight today is on Nikki Honek. Nikki has recently joined Village Caregiving and this week she sat down with Fargo’s Executive Director to talk about her career as a Caregiver.

Nikki has worked as a Caregiver for over 20 years. When asked what she loves about Caregiving, she said “I love helping them out. I’m very compassionate and caring. I just love it! I get along with anybody.” Nikki recently moved to Valley City to be closer to her family. She had been looking for a position as a Caregiver at the same time Village Caregiving was looking for a Caregiver that believes in our mission, “Keep your heart at home.”

Keeping your heart at home was exactly what Nikki was looking for when she was looking for services for her Parents and Grandmother. Nikki was open and vulnerable when sharing this, “This service wasn’t available when I was looking for it. My Grandma died a week after they took her out of her home.” This was hard to hear as it reminded me of my own personal experience with family members who left their home after 30-plus years and how sad and defeated they felt. I remember moving my own grandma into an assisted living facility and just how painful that experience was for all involved.

The wife of Nikki’s client was asked what she thought of Nikki, this was her response “The companionship has been great, we get along so well, she help’s me with anything I need help doing with (husband) or myself. She’s also a friend, I can talk to her about anything. I live out of town and do my errands without worrying about (husband). We don’t have many people come over, so we really look forward to seeing her.”

Nikki’s face was beaming with joy as she spoke about working at Village Caregiving. Nikki had this to say about her work, “Seeing how much I’m helping them is so rewarding. It feels good. I know there are more people that need this.”
