❓ = Is it true that only women self-injure?

🅰️ = False! Studies show that 30%-40% of people who self injure are male. Self harm is also not a sign of a su***de attempt, but instead it's a means of avoiding su***de.

Getting help from a mental health professional, like a member of our team, is crucial to successful recovery.

📅 Today is Self-Injury Awareness Day and the beginning of Self Harm Awareness Month.

Self harm affects millions of people around the world each year. This behavior can be the result of a mental health condition, emotional distress, or a trauma response.

What should you watch for?
🚨 Cutting
🚨 Burning
🚨 Scratching
🚨 Other methods of intentionally self harm

What can you do in response?
🦋 Reach out and be a good listener for the individual.
🦋 Offer them a safe place.
🦋 Share stories so individuals know it’s okay to talk about what they're going through and they are not alone.
🦋 Encourage the person to talk with a mental health provider

❓ Does my health insurance cover mental health care?

🅰️ Yes. Most plans cover mental health care services. You should contact your health insurance provider to:

1️⃣ Confirm how much the patient still has to pay for out of pocket.
2️⃣ Find out which clinics or providers the insurance company considers to be “In-Network”.

🥳 Congratulations: you’re ready to take the steps to work on your mental health!

But, where do you start? Here’s a few key factors to take into consideration as you decide where to make an appointment.

⚕️ Insurance coverage: Check with your health insurance company to see which services they cover and which insurance plans your potential provider accepts. If the provider you want to see isn’t covered, you can ask if they offer payment plans.

🦋 Specialization: What sort of help do you need? Someone who specializes in working with kids? Teens? Adults? The elderly? Also worth consideration: do you need a psychiatrist, who is a medical doctor and can prescribe and manage medications, or a therapist, who focuses on talk therapy and coping strategies?

👩‍⚕️ Personal Qualities: Finding a mental health provider that you connect with is crucial for your mental health journey. In your first few sessions with a new provider, take note of how you feel. Is this a person you can trust, feel safe, vibe with? It’s okay to request a different provider. Finding one you connect with means you will be more likely to stick with treatment plans.

📍 Location: If you live in a rural area, you may want to consider places like Rural Psychiatry Associates that offer telemedicine. This way you can get the care you need without having to travel. All you need is a smart device with good wifi service.

Plus, our scheduling staff are happy to answer questions about our providers and help patients get paired with the best fit.

Right now it is in crisis intervention and trauma care. I try to incorporate empathy, humor, and practical problem-solving into my sessions. I’m a firm believer that laughter can be a powerful tool in the healing journey.

☀️ The days are getting longer again, but that extra sunlight isn't always enough to stave off the doom and gloom of a cold and snowy winter 🥶.

If you’re feeling the effects of Seasonal Affective Disorder, you may want to try a few of these tricks:

🦋 Consider light therapy: Special light therapy lamps provide a brighter light that imitates natural daylight.

🦋 Exercise: Taking a few laps around the office building or march in place can get your blood flowing, boosting endorphins that can enhance your mood.

🦋 Vitamin D: This vitamin boosts serotonin levels which your body needs for mood, sleep, and appetite.

🦋 Talk with a therapist: mental health professionals, like our team, can help you talk through the feelings you’re experiencing and figure out a treatment plan that will work best for you.
