I am excited to announce that as of January 1 I am going to be opening my own counseling practice – Hansen Hearts Counseling! This has been a dream of mine and I am so excited to finally be at this place in my life! I specialize in parenting issues, couples, first responders, and individuals ages 14 and up. I will offer both in person and telehealth sessions. I am able to accept most insurances (couples are self-pay). I have a therapy dog and I am trained in EMDR and TFBCT. With couples I use both Gottman and Emotion Focused Therapy. You can contact me through my website: www.hansenhearts.com or at [email protected]. Let me know if you have any questions!

The Great Realisation

Here they call it The Great Realization. I have been thinking of it as The Great Pause. This video gave me chills. I hope we don't forget the positive lessons we have learned.

"Why we all may need to adjust expectations in a relationship right now.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This pandemic (and my own therapist) got me thinking about Maslow's Hierarchy of needs. Short story is, we need to have basic needs met before we are able to reach things like psychological needs and self-fulfillment needs. Where we are on this pyramid can also correlate with our ability to cope. So, us being in a pandemic, it’s a good bet most of our coping is floating around safety needs: Safety of health, of employment, of housing, of the family, of mortality, of wellbeing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Since we're floating there, it’s much harder to cope around higher-level needs like problem-solving, self-esteem, respect of others, acceptance, and intimacy. Not completely, but, definitely depleted.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When considering relationships, a good amount of those needs are on the higher level. It’s a serious win if you have safety in the relationship right now. And, like most relationships, you might have needs to be met that are up at the top there. Needs that push triggers. Triggers that need higher-level coping. Tackling this right now may prove different than typical. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Okay- here’s where I want to be careful. Your wants and needs are still valid. I’m not suggesting you throw them in the garbage or even not bring them up. But- I am saying that, given all of our depleted abilities to cope right now, you need to match your expectation of change to the current context. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If it can wait, wait until we’re able to move up the pyramid. If it can’t, consider using a therapist to help you tackle this in an optimal way. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You can still show up authentically in your relationship. Give a little grace to yourself and your partner as you handle those higher needs!"

Shout out to my fellow mental health workers!

• We ARE healthcare workers
• We have our own worries AND are present with ALL the fears of our clients in times like these
• We feel the weight of despair, fear and pain of people’s hearts - everyday
• We help keep people out of the hospitals - we are the frontline
• We hold many many secrets which we can never unhear
• We know the weight the human spirit can endure and what cruelty can cause
• We can’t tell anyone what a truly bad day looks like because of HIPAA
• We can’t tell anyone about the triumphs no matter how our hearts soar also because of HIPAA
• We feel pain and celebrate alone

And we go home every night and shed it all to be present for friends and families who think they know what we do and a general public who dismisses our importance in this crisis.
💪🏼❤️💪🏼❤️💪🏼❤️💪🏼❤️💪🏼❤️💪🏼❤️💪🏼

I see you in this pandemic.

Stay safe, be cautious but considerate, and family (if not in your home) may have to be by phone or face time for a while. 💜

Good question to ask yourself...

Parenting reminder to MYSELF to imply more trust: instead of saying "Be careful" or "Drive safe", say, "Road conditions are not great. Let me know if you need any assistance."

(this after I told my 18 year old to Be Careful and Drive Safe which he took as I don't trust him to do those things.)

Thanks again Tracy Briggs for bringing light to this important topic and for inviting me to be part of it.

Thanks to all who participated in our Generation Anxiety series on Anxiety in Gen Z. The last story is online today and it will be reprinted in The Forum next week. But...this is kind of cool...we will also be holding a live streaming event where you can ask questions online to our expert Tracy Hansen of Valley Hope Counseling. I will provide the link information later. But save the date and time. Our live chat is noon to 1pm on Wednesday, Jan. 15th.
