“This October will mark 10 years since my husband had his stroke. He was only 42 years old. We had 5 children ranging in age from 12-years down to 5-months old at the time. I am filled with emotion as I think about the journey it has been for not only my husband, but for our whole family! I wanted to share some of the things that I have learned, which, in a beautiful way, has helped shape me into the wife, mom, daughter, and SLP that I am today.
1. During his recovery, I took over all the roles so he could focus on his therapies and healing. The kids learned to ask mom for help or permissions. Though this was helpful initially, over time, my husband became frustrated. He stated he was always “out of the loop” and “felt obsolete” in our family. My takeaway: always make time for talking and listening. Check in frequently on how things are going, what things can continue as are and what things should be tweaked or scrapped altogether.
2. As a caregiver, accept the help that is offered by others! We learned that others offer to help because they care about you, and they truly want to help! Take them up on bringing over a meal, driving to a therapy appointment, bringing the kids home from school. They wouldn’t offer if they didn’t want to! I also learned that this took some of the pressure off my husband, feeling like he was leaving me with all the work.
3. Make sure to rest throughout the day! Find a dim, quiet room, turn off all electronics, close your eyes and rest! These breaks help you recharge to get you through the day! We learned that being more tired meant he was less tolerant of noise (which, in a house with 5 young kids wasn’t the easiest to avoid!), his ability to use the words he wanted to use decreased when he was more tired, which decreased our ability to communicate effectively, which increased frustration for both of us. When he started following a daily schedule for ‘brain breaks’, this improved!
4. Humor is a good thing! My husband and I have always teased each other and our kids, and we continued to throughout this journey! I should clarify that the teasing is not done in a negative way! I feel it lightened the feeling of some tough situations.
These are just a few of the things I have learned on our journey. I feel that I look at my patients a little different after having experienced a life altering medical situation. I know that life is busy! I know that there are better days and not so great days! I understand that there is more going on than just therapy in a patient’s life! My job is to look at the whole picture, the environments, and situations that the patient is found in and help him/her use strengths along with strategies to facilitate growth on their path to recovery!”
Well the very short part of my story is I woke up after my TBI unable to communicate very well. I couldn't find the words to say, but I could draw. And I was very happy all the ways I had created art before I remembered how to do. I was also happy to have God on my side helping me move forward each day, so the Christian Ukrainian Easter eggs make me so happy to create and share 😊
This is something I wrote for my brain injury:
"Proof is easy. Faith is hard work. Yes, Proof that you are alive is easy, here you are. But having Faith that you will be able to be yourself again after a brain injury is hard work. Simply getting up and starting the day can be hard now to work on rebuilding who you are is very hard work. But you can do it. God didn't give up on you. Have faith in yourself and keep moving forward".
“In one moment on the night of August 24, 2023, my entire life changed. The one thing I could trust and rely on was in serious trouble…my brain. I fell backwards opening the garage door using the code open pad. I hit the concrete on the back left side of my head and was unconscious for over four hours before a neighbor found me and called emergency rescue for help. In the hospital, MRIs revealed that my frontal lobe was pushed way to the right side with bleeding on both sides of my brain. This resulted in brain surgery being needed sooner than later. My life changing journey was open for business.
For those who have been by my side since my accident, like my two daughters, all my siblings, and close friends...THANK YOU! Please have patience and listen to me and try to understand or learn about my injury. If you see me and I cannot recall a story, please be kind. My brain is in a daily tug of war and I'm fighting with all I have to remember.
I'm a strong man, a fighter, and I will never give up! My journey is not for the weak and far from being over. As I mentioned earlier, my life changing journey is open for business, and it’s working! I do believe this happened for a reason. I have spent a lot of time trying to justify why it was me and now I believe that maybe it’s true - God gives the hard battles to the toughest - the TBI soldiers! Lastly, thanks to all the therapists who have been by side while I am trying to figure out "normal” again”.
“If I had to describe a word that would summarize dealing with my stroke, it would be discovery. I learned a lot of things about myself. Since my stroke I have learned to slow down and take things as they come in. This is not automatic, it has taken time and I’m not done with my journey.”

FRIDAY FEELS *shared with permission of patient* This patient was referred to Onword Therapy for voice therapy. She was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and having a difficult time communicating so others could hear her. She used to be able to sing, but due to changes in her voice, has not sang in over a year. So… that was her treatment goal- to sing again 🎶 This patient completed the SPEAK OUT! program, with Whitney, a certified SPEAK OUT! therapist. It consists of four weeks of intensive treatment (3x/week) and home programming. On her last day of treatment, this dedicated patient met her goal and requested to sing “Jesus Loves Me”. This success called for a little violin duet with her therapist! 🎻 Patient said, “I never thought I would be able to sing again. I am amazed!” We are so proud of you! Keep speaking and singing with INTENT! 🎶 If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s and experiencing vocal changes, call our certified specialists at 701.364.5433!
