Ava and Nova are known as "MoMo" twins, meaning they shared one placenta and one amniotic sac. This occurs in about 1 in 8,000 twin pregnancies, which made Courtney's pregnancy high-risk. She spent 40 days in the hospital and gave birth to the girls at 28 weeks. Ava and Nova spent their first 73 days in the Bismarck NICU.

While Ava and Nova were in the NICU, Mathew and Courtney were grateful to be able to have care close to home and decided to reach out and say thank you to Mark and Claudia Thompson for their gift to the Sanford Health Foundation to help make the Bismarck NICU a reality.

Since then, the two families have become friends through their own shared experiences.
