Jack Clarkson and Virginia Lemaster, both born on New Year's Day in 1925, recently celebrated an incredible milestone—their 100th birthdays. Jack, a Bay Area native, spent his life surrounded by family and served his country in the Navy during WWII. Virginia, originally from Colorado and now a Yolo County resident, was a beloved music teacher with a passion for staying active. She fondly recalls years spent playing golf and enjoying good food, habits she credits for her longevity.

Virginia's life has been shaped by love and loss. Her husband, Greg, also a WWII veteran, passed away from injuries sustained in battle. Though she never remarried, Virginia cherishes the memories of her one true love. Now, as she reflects on her century of life, she offers wisdom to others: "Just forget about it and live, you know?" To the younger generation, she shares heartfelt advice: “Enjoy life. Enjoy animals, enjoy people. Don’t expect so much to be given to you free of charge. Work for it." Her words echo a lifetime of resilience, gratitude, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life.

Grand Canyon University students, including junior social work major Raphaela Bravo, have volunteered at Glencroft Center for Modern Aging in Glendale, where they connect with residents through group sessions and activities such as cold-hot hand treatments. The experience has broadened Bravo’s perspective from focusing on children to realizing the needs and stories of older adults. Supported by GCU’s Changing Lives Outreach program, the students engage in meaningful conversations—learning about everything from life advice and local history to managing dementia and bereavement—while offering emotional support. Glencroft’s holistic wellness approach, “ZoeLife,” encourages residents to stay active and engaged, and the students likewise discover new ways to enhance seniors’ well-being. This intergenerational interaction enriches the residents’ lives and prepares the students for future careers in social work, psychology, and related fields.

At Right at Home, we are dedicated to enriching the lives of clients and their families. Recently, we heard from a grateful husband about the difference caregiver Marcy, from Right at Home Snohomish County, has made for his wife, Joy. He shared that Joy feels completely at ease around Marcy, forming a genuine bond that has opened up new possibilities in her daily life. Now, Joy enthusiastically takes part in activities at the local Y and even tackles art projects—endeavors she once avoided. The husband is overjoyed to see his wife so engaged and spirited again. This story exemplifies the power of compassionate, personalized care and the profound impact a dedicated caregiver can have on a family’s well-being. Thank you Marcy for embodying the Right at Home mission of improving the quality of life for those we serve.

A UPS driver named Raheem Cooper discovered an elderly woman, Marie, collapsed on her driveway while on his route in Valdosta, Georgia. After calling emergency services and reassuring her—calling her “grandmother”—he stayed until help arrived. Marie underwent emergency brain surgery and survived, and her family, grateful for Cooper’s kindness, managed to find him to express their thanks. His hospital visit brought Marie her first genuine smile and hug since the incident. Cooper even launched a GoFundMe, contributing $100 of his own money to support the family’s expenses. In recognition of his compassion, UPS honored him with a personal letter from the CEO, a plaque, and football tickets, reminding us that true kindness and heroism can be found in everyday acts.
