๐Ÿ’› October is ADHD Awareness Month ๐Ÿ’›

To the ones with a million tabs open in their mind: We see you ๐Ÿ’ญ

ADHD isnโ€™t about being โ€œlazyโ€ or โ€œunfocusedโ€โ€” itโ€™s about having a brain that processes the world differently.

โœจAt Becoming Balanced, we know that ADHD doesnโ€™t define who you areโ€” itโ€™s simply one part of your story. โœจ

You deserve compassion, understanding, and the tools to thrive in your own way.

๐Ÿง  This month, weโ€™re shining a light on neurodiversity and celebrating the unique ways our brains work.

Letโ€™s spread compassion, not misconceptions.

Employee spotlight on Desiree, the President of Becoming Balanced! ๐Ÿ’œ

How long youโ€™ve been at Becoming Balanced?
โ€œJuly 2019!โ€

What licenses do you have?
โ€œIโ€™m a Licensed Psychologist, PhD in Clinical Psychology.โ€

What are your specialties, and what you find rewarding about them?
โ€œClinical health psychology, I enjoy working with women on managing chronic diseases including the emotional toll living with medical conditions can take on them. I want women to have the best quality of life possible and itโ€™s so rewarding to assist them on their journey to finding what works for them.โ€

Whatโ€™s your favorite way to spend your days off? โ€œReading, being outside (when the mosquitos arenโ€™t bad!), crocheting, snuggling with dogs, coloring, and making my spaces at home cozy.โ€

What does self care look like to you?
โ€œCleaning up clutter in the house (it drives me nuts!), slowing down and resting, getting enough sleep, baths, and connecting with nature.โ€

Whatโ€™s your favorite thing about working here?
โ€œThe people! Our clients are wonderful and bring a great energy to the space, they are here to do hard work for themselves, and it shows when they walk in the door. The women who work here are truly amazing and I cannot believe how blessed we have been to have such a fabulous team. I am forever grateful for this experience.โ€

How long have you been with Becoming Balanced?
โ€œIโ€™ve been at Becoming Balanced since January of 2022.โ€

What licenses do you have?
โ€œIโ€™m a Licenses Professional Clinical Counselor! (LPCC)โ€

What are your specialties, and what do you find rewarding about them?
โ€œI am certified in Compassionate Bereavement Care (CBC), which is a mindfulness-based and non-medicalized approach to traumatic grief. I am beyond grateful that I was able to participate in CBC training and learn from Dr. Joanne Cacciatore, a devoted advocate for grievers. The experience changed my perspective on the ways that society often falls short in supporting grieving people, especially those who have experienced the traumatic death of a loved one. I wish no one had to go through that kind of suffering, yet so many do. So what I try to do is be with people in their pain instead of turning away from it, offer a space of compassion and care to be with grief, try to make sense of a world without their loved one physically in it, and support them in learning how to carry grief throughout their life. Any time someone trusts me with this, I am deeply honored.โ€

Whatโ€™s your favorite way to spend a day off?
โ€œMy ideal day off would be a nice slow morning, sitting outside, coffee and a walk in green space with my dog, Blue. Connecting with friends and family. Maybe cooking a delicious meal. Sometimes itโ€™s fun to go to the movies or watch something new.โ€

Whatโ€™s does self care look like to you?
โ€œFor me, self care needs to be simple and flexible. Itโ€™s being present in the moment, moving my body in whatever way feels good, getting outside and in nature, and being with the people I love. I try and do some version of each, as often as possible.โ€

Whatโ€™s your favorite part about working here?
โ€œMy favorite thing about working here is the group of women around me, who are all so talented at what they do. And they are all lovely human beings!โ€

Each year, far too many mothers are lost to struggles of postpartum depression, anxiety, and other perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. These conditions are common, and affect 1 in 5 women. But stigma, shame, and lack of awareness keep many from reaching out until it feels unbearable.

Perinatal mental health struggles are medical conditions, and they donโ€™t make you a bad mother or partner. Mothers deserve the same compassion and treatment for mental health as they do physical health.

The employee spotlight is shining on Andrea!! ๐Ÿ™‚

How long youโ€™ve been with Becoming Balanced?
โ€œ4 years now!โ€

What licenses do you have?
โ€œIโ€™m a LPCC in North Dakota and LPC in Minnesota.โ€

What are tour specialties, and what do you find rewarding about it?
โ€œMy specialties include a Certificate in Sports Counseling from California University of Pennsylvania. I find this additional training rewarding because it allows me to work with athletes on their mental health both in and out of performance in their sport. I enjoy this specialty because of my own participation in sport, specifically tennis at the collegiate level as well as the different coaching experiences Iโ€™ve had. In addition to Sports Counseling, I enjoy working with individuals who have concerns with anxiety and/or depression symptoms as well as struggles with various life transitions people experience.โ€

Whatโ€™s your favorite way to spend your days off?
โ€œI enjoy spending time with family and friends when I have free time. On my days off, I am usually taking my dog on walks and occasionally playing tennis.โ€

What does self-care look like to you?
โ€œSelf-care looks different for me, depending on what I am needing. Sometimes self-care is relaxing on the couch and getting caught up on some of my favorite shows. There are other times when I am needing something more physical so I will do something active like taking my dog for a walk, going to the gym, or playing tennis. Connection with my friends and family is a big part of my self-care routine. Overall, self-care looks like a combination of all these things!โ€

Whatโ€™s your favorite thing about working here?
โ€œMy favorite part about working at Becoming Balanced is the team of staff and clinicians that create such a great environment, promoting womenโ€™s mental health!โ€

September is Su***de Prevention Awareness Month and this week is Su***de Prevention Awareness Week. One way to destigmatize suicidal thinking and mental health concerns is to talk about it! People who are experiencing suicidal thinking are not seeking attention, they are struggling to find reasons to keep going. Please continue to check in on loved ones you are concerned about-particularly those who are isolating. Please talk about mental health. Please reach out for help if you are struggling. You are not alone.

Shining the employee spotlight on Dr. Jessica Jones!

How long have you been at Becoming Balanced?
โ€œAlmost 3 years, I started in October 2022!โ€

What Licenses do you have?
โ€œIโ€™m a Licensed Psychologist in North Dakota and Minnesota.โ€

What are your specialties, and what do you find rewarding about it?
โ€œMy specialties include psychological testing and providing psychotherapy for clients who are neurodivergent. I find this so rewarding as I think providing clarity about oneโ€™s experience is a game changer, especially helping people to understand whether and how their brain has worked differently their whole life and the myriad ways that can impact a person.โ€

Whatโ€™s your favorite way to spend your days off?
โ€œI enjoy having a balance of time for myself, and time with the family and dog!โ€

What does self care look like to you?
โ€œI like engaging in structured creative activities, like Legos and painting, as well as playing piano and being physically active. I also try to schedule days off where I do not need to โ€œget readyโ€ and have no time demands of certain things happening at certain times. Structure can be really helpful most days, and itโ€™s also helpful for my brain to take a break from it.โ€

Whatโ€™s your favorite part about working here?
โ€œI love coming to work, as itโ€™s an environment where I feel supported and where my coworkers are as passionate about helping others to find balance and advocate for themselves as I am!โ€

Welcome to Becoming Balanced

Hello! Iโ€™m Dr. Zielke and I am going to give you my version of the story of how Becoming Balanced came into being. Trishia and I began the journey of developing โ€œBecoming Balancedโ€ after I attended the Womenโ€™s Health Conference on September 17, 2018. I was at the conference that day with my mother and was super excited for the afternoon keynote speaker, Danielle LaPorte, as I had been a fan for a couple years (I was even able to get a book autographed and my photo taken with her!). (Put photo in). During Ms. LaPorteโ€™s talk, she discussed how important reaching women is to her, her own struggles in being a business woman, and evaluating all things in life as either โ€œlightโ€ or โ€œheavyโ€. I had been struggling in life leading up to that day and I started to reflect on how most things in my life seemed โ€œheavyโ€ at that point. I spent the rest of the day in solitude, mulling over what would feel โ€œlightโ€ to me and allowing myself to dream big. The result of all of that mulling was โ€œBecoming Balancedโ€. I knew opening my own business would be difficult to do alone and there was only one person who came to mind when I thought about sharing the journey. Trishia has been my friend and colleague since 2012. She is an amazingly strong, independent, and passionate woman who serves as a daily inspiration to me. I approached her immediately the next day about my idea and she was hooked (after I assured her we would be successful). We had many discussions about our rationale for starting our own business as well as how to manage the challenges which will likely fuel many blog posts to come.

For me, flexibility in my schedule and being able to follow my passions were the two major reasons for starting Becoming Balanced. I found myself struggling with finding time to care for my health and family, work, and make time for all the wonderful people in my life. Working 8-5 Monday through Friday does not work with my lifestyle anymore and acknowledging that was difficult. My sincerest hope in developing Becoming Balanced is to help the women in the Fargo-Moorhead community put into place the services and skills, in an accessible way, that they need to live their best most balanced life.

Now itโ€™s Trishiaโ€™s turn to tell her version of the story:

The journey of โ€œBecoming Balancedโ€ has been nothing short of amazing thus far. I was so excited when Dr. Zielke approached me with this idea, however, I was hesitant at first. I already have a lot on my plate and I have never been much of a โ€œrisk takerโ€. But, when she said to me โ€œWhy canโ€™t we do this?, We can do this!โ€, I realized this is absolutely true! Since becoming a mom over 10 years ago, it has seemed like an ongoing challenge to find the work/family balance that I desired. This is a common theme that I also hear from clients. It was time to take my own advice, โ€œyou need to do what works best for you and what is going to make you happyโ€. Just like Dr. Zielke identified, working 8-5 Monday-Friday was not working for me. The main motivators for me in starting Becoming Balanced include the need for flexibility, doing the work that I am driven and passionate about-helping and empowering women, and frankly to be able to take better care of myself and my family. Life is too short to not even try to do amazing things!
