HOT TAKE: one defining feature of trauma is extra white matter development in the brain. White matter is responsible for the flow of information in the brain; information overload can create a sense of overwhelm and over stimulation for anyone, but happens much faster in the traumatized brain. This process can increasing suffering.

Social media has increased our flow of information to each other. High levels of social media use is correlated with worsening depression and anxiety symptoms…perhaps a constant flow of information is not a great thing? Disconnect from social media, get out and get into nature!

Hot Take: One component of a healthy marriage is ‘reciprocal sacrifice’. If one member of the marriage is constantly sacrificing while the other benefits, resentment can grow.

In my latest blog, I asked ChatGPT 5 some questions about the use of AI for mental health support and how AI may be used like a therapist. I’ll admit that some of the answers were not what I expected, and I found this to be informative for myself. It’s a bit of a lengthy read, but much of the blog is the ‘interview’ I did with ChatGPT 5, and my conclusions afterward.

It is increasingly evident that AI is becoming an important aspect of our lives these days. AI is being used in all different kinds of capacities, such as business, organization, creation of art and even coaching. One particular study highlighted an eye-popping figure; "by July 2025, 18 billion mess...

June is Men’s Mental Health Awareness month. In my latest blog, I talk about one aspect of what being a man means, and how that’s different from being a boy. I also highlight the ideals I am trying to raise my 4 boys with, to help them grow to be healthy men!

I went back and forth about blogging on this topic for June of 2025; it happened to be Father's Day when I decided to start writing this on my back patio, enjoying the cool weather and watching my youngest son play. He is searching for baby rabbits that ran behind our shed, his innocent curiosity pi...

Trials and hardships are opportunities to strengthen character. Resolve and resilience are only improved when we choose to face life’s challenges, not run from them. I hope you are having a great week!

Found this on the interwebs, and thought I’d share! There certainly is a difference between the clinical jargon we professionals use, and how it’s being used in our culture.

I’d also like to add to this list the use of “narcissist”. Pop psychology might say that it’s an arrogant or unsavory person (trending also towards describing a manipulative or evil person), but actual psychology will say that narcissism, at a clinical level, is indicative of a dysfunctional personality, related to a very low self-esteem and a fragile sense of self, often overcompensating with grandiosity or the tendency to view one as superior to others. These individuals tend to believe they have no equals or true peers.

Happy Monday!

My latest take on personal ways to navigate a hostile environment.

Our vacations to the beach are very different between my wife and I. I tend to get darker and don't really burn, while my wife has to be careful. One of the worst burns resulted in a few days of laying in bed and applying gratuitous amounts of aloe on her skin; I even had to help at times, as it was...

A great reminder! Social media use is positively correlated with depression, anger and anxiety. Try to limit how much you engage with hot button topics online. Practicing mindfulness and being present with people and things that bring you joy can help lower depression, anxiety and anger. I hope you have a wonderful week!
