"When I can't be here, I know he's so well taken care of and loved. I see it on the nurses every time and our doctors. They know him so well too. That makes it easier for me to be home if I need to," said Audrey Winckler, mom to Liam, a Sanford NICU baby.

Liam, his parents and care providers at Sanford Children's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Sioux Falls recently welcomed a new volunteer during an international NICU read-a-thon – Sanford Health president and CEO, Bill Gassen.

"It really reminds you what matters most and really the true reason why Sanford Health exists," said Gassen.

With a history of smoking and cancer, North Dakota resident Tony Hagan took the advice of his friend and doctor, Bradley Skari, MD, to get annual low-dose CT scans.

Twice now, the scans have found cancer in Hagan's lungs, keeping him alive and healthy.

"I trust him with my life," Hagan said. "That's how I feel about this man. He's just done amazing things for me."

"If I could convince one person to go in, that makes me feel like some of this had a purpose."

When Jaime Franken noticed a lump in her breast, she thought it was scar tissue from a past surgery.

Jaime was terrified of going to the doctor, but she decided to go in and get the lump checked out. She was shocked when her doctor told her she had breast cancer.

Jaime is thankful for the care she received at the Sanford Cancer Center and she’s now using her story to encourage others to take action.

"First and foremost, being outside is never a problem. By all means, get outside, enjoy the fresh air. I think the other part you can do is if you know you’re going to be interacting with a lot of people or even just a few people, a little bit of antibacterial hand sanitizer or washing your hands is always a good idea.”

As a nurse practitioner at Sanford Reproductive Medicine in Fargo, Allison Harrison found herself in the position of working with patients trying to conceive while grieving her own losses.

After her third miscarriage, at 11 weeks, Allison was stunned to find out that the company didn’t have a leave policy for pregnancy loss. Through a heartfelt letter to the CEO, Allison was able to create change for parents at Sanford and beyond – and find her family's own happy ending along the way.
