Have you scheduled your routine checkups for this year?

Remember it is important to stay current with your healthcare visits. Regular check-ups for your body, your teeth and your eyes can be helpful in early detection.

As much as you can, stay current with your healthcare visits. Regular doctor visits usually include:

Primary care visit and/or OB/GYN yearly
Dental visits twice per year
Visual exam yearly
Consider specialist visits if needed

This month's healthy brain hack is to Stay current with your healthcare visits.

As Dr Cris says, “you’re not just a brain floating around. You’re a brain connected to a body.”

Making sure your body is the healthiest possible can help decrease burden of neurological diseases.

Below are some basic starting points to help you stay on track:

Primary care visit and/or OB/GYN about once per year

Dental visits roughly twice per year

Visual exam around once per year

Volunteering and participating in social activities that give back to the community at least once per week can help to boost your brain resilience and improve mental health.

There are some factors that increase risk for neurological disorders such as migraine and dementia that are modifiable. this means that our lifestyle habits may prevent, delay onset or decrease the severity of the condition.

volunteering has multiple benefits including decreasing stress, depression, isolation and increasing confidence, purpose and happiness.

stress is the number one trigger in migraine. stress, depression and isolation are all modifiable risk factors for dementia. a recent study also suggested that women with migraine have a greater risk of dementia.

the encouraging part is that we can start today and work on risk factors via lifestyle modifications that will decrease our risk of neurological disorders.

give me a high five in the comments if you are ready to get out there and volunteer!!

Our brain hack this month is to volunteer. Participate in social activities once per week that give back to the community.

This builds resilience and lessens modifiable risk factors for the prevention of neurological disorders, including dementia.

More specifically, studies have shown that volunteering boosts brain health by decreasing stress, depression, isolation and increasing confidence, purpose and happiness.

Happy Tuesday! Our brain hack this month is to challenge your brain for 30-45 minutes per day.

Find something that is fun and challenging, but not frustrating and alternate exercising different parts of your brain.

The type of activity depends greatly on what your day looks like. According to Dr. Gary Small, "the amount mental aerobics each person wants or needs will vary. Some people have too much mental stimulation at work and need to relax instead. I agree that brain fitness exercises should vary depending on an individual’s baseline abilities." This should be an activity that is enjoyable and challenges you, but doesn't stress or frustrate you. Alternate exercising different parts of the brain.

This can be as simple as doing a crossword or sudoku .easybrain puzzle, or playing along with Jeopardy . Or even doing a household chore with a blind fold!
