The Difference Between Myofascial Release and Massage:

While massage focuses on muscles and circulation, Myofascial Release addresses the connective tissue (fascia).

MFR uses slow, gentle pressure (sustained holds between 5 and 15 minutes) to release fascial restrictions, where massage uses consistent flowing strokes to relax muscles and often changing pressures.

Mostly true story... 😂

Yes, this was all one client.

Yes, his quad was COMPLETELY torn 30 years ago and he never got surgery to get it repaired.

But thankfully, he did not expect it all to be fixed in one session. He was actually very good about following instructions and doing what I told him to do, and he recovered beautifully with the help of a good chiropractor.

Downfall is, I get so many other clients who have similar stories, and they get so frustrated when one session doesn't fix everything.

Whether an injury was years in the making or instantaneous in an accident, there are so many complex factors to how the body compensates and tries to heal itself.

It rarely rights itself after 1-6 sessions.

Be patient, give your body some grace. It's doing what it can to protect you.

You just have to listen and take care of it.

What Causes Fascial Restrictions?

Fascial restrictions can be caused by trauma, inflammation, repetitive stress, or *prolonged* poor posture.

These restrictions create stress on the fascia which puts pressure on nerves and muscles, resulting in pain and limited movement.

MFR works to release these tensions, improving tissue quality and mobility.

My client was diagnosed with Degenerative Back Disease, which I've come to understand is Doctor code for "We don't know why your back hurts."

When she first started seeing me she couldn't pick her legs up to put shoes on. So, she's been having to wear slip on shoes.

After her second session began regaining mobility in her hips and was able to pick her legs up again to put her shoes on.

It's the little things you can't do anymore that become so exciting when you can finally do it again!

How myofascial release helps with pain:

MFR involves applying gentle but firm pressure to restricted areas while also stretching the fascia with both hands.

This encourages the fascia to release at its own pace, avoiding the risk of forcing it and causing more tightness within the body.

As restrictions are alleviated, fluids can come back into the fascia, creating a healthier environment for muscles to work and relax effectively.

Signs you may need myofascial release:

Chronic pain that persists despite massage or chiropractic treatments.

Injuries or discomfort that don’t show up on MRIs or x-rays (fascial injuries and adhesions do not show up on imaging).

Pain frequently moves locations in your body, one day it’s your neck, one day your back, the next day it’s your hand….

Undiagnosed pain that leaves you feeling frustrated.

These signs may indicate that your fascia is in need of some help.

My faster release can help bring back balance and mobility, allowing you to move freely and comfortably.

Consider exploring Myofascial release to help with your pain problems!

What is fascia?

Fascia is a complex web of connective tissue that is intertwined and wrapped around muscles, nerves blood vessels, bones, and organs.

You even have fascia in your eyes…

When fascia becomes tight or restricted, it can cause “undiagnosable” pain, limited mobility, and even symptoms often referred to as fibromyalgia.

Myofascial release works to reduce these restrictions, giving you greater movement and relief from discomfort.

What is Myofascial Release?

Myofascial Release (MFR) is a hands-on therapy that relieves tension and restriction in the fascia, helping to reduce pain, increase movement, and promote overall healing.

This gentle and slow technique uses light, sustained pressure to allow the body to release tension naturally.

Unlike traditional massage, MFR does not use long, flowing strokes and it should not be painful.
