Is Sports Medicine Just for Athletes?

The answer is NO. Sports medicine isn’t just for people involved in sports. This orthopedic subspecialty deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of musculoskeletal problems affecting anyone involved in any type of physical activity — gym lovers, professional athletes, weekend warriors, and even seniors who refuse to give in to old age and strive to maintain an active lifestyle.

Here at Tri County Orthopedics in Farmington Hills, MI, our board-certified sports medicine physicians are best known for their dedication to providing the highest quality of care — helping people successfully recover from their injuries and perform at their best in whatever form of physical activity they’re involved in.

Ever heard of a condition called De Quervain’s tenosynovitis? It refers to the painful swelling of the tendons that run along the thumb side of the wrist and attach to the base of the thumb. Repetitive thumb pinching, squeezing, and moving the wrist outwards toward the little finger render a person at risk for De Quervain’s tenosynovitis.

Visit one of our providers if you’re experiencing persistent pain and swelling near the base of your thumb despite resting it, applying cold pack to the area, and taking pain relievers. Call our office at (248) 474-5575. https://bit.ly/3eYJ7jO

Pickleball has been dubbed "America's fastest-growing sport" – and for good reasons. It is not just good exercise. It's a social sport that's fairly easy for anyone to pick up. That said, just like any sport, pickleball has its fair share of injuries.

If you get hurt during your pickleball game, don't return to action too soon. Consider following the well-documented R.I.C.E. technique — rest, ice, compression, and elevation — in the short term. If symptoms persist, see one of our board-certified sports medicine physicians here at Tri County Orthopedics in Farmington Hills, MI for proper evaluation.

To book an appointment with one of our providers, contact our office at (248) 474-5575.

❗☝️Swinging a child by their arms may seem like harmless fun, but it puts them at risk for nursemaid’s elbow – an injury that occurs when the elbow partially slips out of place. Remember, children's bones are still developing, so it does not take very much force for this to happen.
