pandemic blahs... handling perfection... finding motivation
How do you imagine a trainer? Some might say... Well they know how to work out, so they write their own workouts and tell themselves what to do and are super internally motivated. They're immune to slumps, they drink spinach smoothies, get enough vegetables, and wear perfect fitness pants. Exercise is rarely uncomfortable for them. I mean, they're the image of health and fitness. Right?
No, not quite.
We're real people. And we're subject to the same barriers as you. Time, boredom, energy levels, distractions, responsibilities, etc. We need our favorite music to keep us moving. And we may need someone else to lead us. We need goals, a hard deadline, just like everyone else. We're also subject to the pandemic as a barrier.
My husband and I have kept our gym membership but we haven't gone since March. The summer and fall seasons were spent training outdoors for the 5k, 10k. and half marathon races we do every year in February. However cold weather drove us inside and with the pandemic continuing, the races went virtual. I wanted to keep our registration, but it amounts to just buying a medal and at Disney rates, it couldn't be justified. Training for the Princess weekend keeps me working all year toward goals, because we don't want to be left behind. Without that as the carrot, the focus turned to weight management.
So we have an elliptical in our kitchen, (yes kitchen... proximity to water -- good, food -- bad) found on Craigslist. I thought I could do this, but I have to say it.... it's boring. I set up playlists on YouTube of the (hobby) videos I wanted to catch up on, I have Hulu to watch, and I got in the day's workout but I kept getting off. A few minutes felt like forever. I miss the machines at the gym with the programs that tell you what to do, and when. To see the clock running, the track progress, the interval duration -- these are all motivating. I'm not likely to step off and let it pass by. Gadgets do help!
Surprise! It's not enough, even for a trainer who knows better, to just try to keep occupied and go through the motions. It really helps to have another person to follow, and I'm not just saying that because I'm a trainer myself. I've now been scouting workout videos and plucked a few to try on my next workout. It's such a relief to see someone else or what they're directing, and to follow the music beat.
The takeaway is that perfection is an illusion. Everyone is subject to the same barriers. Fitness is attainable, and you don't have to go it alone.
