With offices in Ann Arbor and Farmington Hills we have therapists who take a wide range of insurances, including Medicare and Medicaid. The Mel Bornstein Clinic is made possible through a generous gift from Mel and Audrey Bornstein and by subsequent donations from friends and members of the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute and Society. We have also received a grant from the American Psychoanalyti
c Association Foundation. We have raised sufficient funds to begin the necessary steps to establish the MBCPP as a full-functioning, free-standing Outpatient Psychiatric Clinic (OPC).
“For over forty years, the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute has provided reduced-fee psychoanalysis and psychotherapy in Farmington Hills and Ann Arbor” according to Aisha Abbasi, M.D. Chair of the steering committee overseeing the project. “While we have provided high-quality treatment to many people, we have never, until now, been able to collect reimbursement from insurance companies. Our primary mission is to broaden the base of those we might serve in the community by enabling people to use their insurances to help them underwrite the costs of therapy.”
The Mel Bornstein Clinic is scheduled to receive the accreditation of the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) mid-October, which will meet the requirements for reimbursement from most insurance companies, including eventually Medicare and Medicaid. For those without insurance, we will continue to work out a reduced-fee arrangement, as has been the practice when directly affiliated with Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute. The therapists will be supervised by members of the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute, assuring high quality oversight, guidance, and instruction in clinical work.
“Therapies offered at the MBCPP will be guided by the sound and ethical standards that are promoted by the long tradition of psychoanalytic education and practice”, said Dr. Abbasi. “We will provide thorough and intelligent assessment and evaluation, as well as opportunities for intensive psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. I believe this distinguishes us as unique in the Detroit metropolitan area”. The Mel Bornstein Clinic operates as a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation, a free-standing legal entity separate from MPI and MPF. All surplus revenues will support the educational and outreach activities of the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute, through the Michigan Psychoanalytic Foundation. About the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute & Society
The Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute provides training and educational programs in adult and child/adolescent psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. The Michigan Psychoanalytic Society is an association of professional psychoanalysts and other professionals interested in psychoanalysis. The Society's mission is to represent the clinical, professional, and research interests of psychoanalysis and its members. The Psychoanalytic Clinical Perspectives Group (PCPG) is an outreach organization whose aim is to enhance undergraduate and graduate students' opportunities to understand psychoanalytic ideas and clinical work while they're still in school. The Institute and Society are supported financially by the Michigan Psychoanalytic Foundation, which also supports outreach and public information as part of its mission. The Mel Borstein Clinic for Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy stands as a separate legal entity from MPF, MPI and MPS, a non-profit supporting organization of the Michigan Psychoanalytic Foundation.
