Happy ! As we reach the end of Black Maternal Health Week, our spotlight features a non-profit organization that is growing roots in the community to support Black moms in Detroit; Melanin Motherhood Haven! Melanin Motherhood Haven aims to build safe and thriving spaces for Black moms and some of the ways this organization does so is by offering community baby showers (May 30th!), advocating for equitable breastfeeding resources, developing community gardens for access to good nutrition for mothers and babies, and so much more.

April is National Minority Health Month, and mental health equity deserves to be part of that conversation. đź’¬

Among adults with a mental illness, Hispanic (44%), Black (39%), and Asian (33%) adults are significantly less likely than white adults (58%) to receive mental health services. That gap isn’t about need. It’s about access, trust, and systems that weren’t built with everyone in mind.

BIPOC communities are more likely to receive lower quality care or services that aren’t linguistically or culturally appropriate. Research consistently links social determinants like lower income, unstable housing, and unemployment to higher rates of depression, anxiety, and PTSD; burdens that fall disproportionately on communities of color.

Today is Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day 🕯️

We honor the 6 million Jewish lives lost during the Holocaust, and we stand with survivors, their descendants, and all who carry this grief forward.

As a mental health community, we recognize that trauma does not end with the generation that experienced it. The psychological wounds of the Holocaust, including intergenerational trauma, continue to affect survivors’ families today.

To remember is to resist erasure. We will not look away.

This week is Black Maternal Health Week!
Black pregnant women face a maternal mortality rate of 50.3 deaths per 100,000 live births which is three times the national average.

The crisis extends beyond physical health. Roughly 40% of Black mothers experience maternal mental health conditions, yet nearly 60% receive no support or treatment for prenatal or postnatal mental health care. Barriers include stigma, lack of culturally competent providers, and systemic inequities.

Contributing factors include inequitable access to healthcare, implicit bias among providers, and the compounded effects of historical and present-day racial disparities.

Up to 80% of maternal deaths are preventable. Systemic change, not individual behavior, is what moves the needle.

Black Maternal Health Week (April 11–17) is led by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance to amplify the voices and lived experiences of Black mamas and birthing people. We stand with that mission.

Today is the SAAM Day of Action! The first Tuesday of April, and the start of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. This year marks 25 years of the national SAAM campaign. The theme: “25 Years Stronger: Looking Back, Moving Forward.”

Sexual violence affects every community but not equally:
- 1 in 5 women in the U.S. has experienced completed or attempted r**e in her lifetime, and nearly 1 in 4 men has experienced contact sexual violence.
- Nearly 4 in 5 bisexual women and about 3 in 5 le***an women and gay men have experienced contact sexual violence in their lifetimes.
- Almost half of all transgender and gender diverse people have been sexually assaulted, with even higher rates among trans people of color.

These numbers represent people in our communities, our waiting rooms, our care. Trauma-informed, identity-affirming care is essential. We believe survivors.

April is Autism Acceptance Month! Most of the conversation focuses on children but autism is lifelong, and adults are significantly underserved.

Autism affects approximately 1 in 31 children in the U.S. (CDC, 2025) but those children grow up. The CDC estimates about 2.2% of U.S. adults are autistic, yet formal diagnosis rates in adulthood remain far below what prevalence data suggests.

The gap is systemic. Diagnostic tools were historically built around research on young boys, leaving women, people of color, and those who learned to mask their traits chronically missed. The better someone is at masking, the easier it is for their autism to go unnoticed, often at significant psychological cost.

Autistic adults are nearly three times more likely to experience a co-occurring mental health condition than the general population. Many are treated for anxiety or depression without anyone asking why.

Why We’re Here

The Samaritan Counseling Center of Southeastern Michigan is an interfaith pastoral counseling center. This means that we provide counseling and psychotherapy that integrates the best in psychological and psychiatric theory and practice with the resources of the client’s religious/faith tradition, if the client wishes to do so. Pastoral Counselors utilize a holistic approach in their counseling. Giving attention to intellectual, emotional, physical and spiritual dimensions of personhood. An important ingredient which makes pastoral counseling different from other forms of counseling and psychotherapy is the conviction that life’s crises and transitions are best met by both the wisdom of religious teachings and the knowledge and skills of the human sciences, such as psychiatry and psychology. Samaritan Counseling Center offers counseling and psychotherapy in many forms, for many needs, such as: Individual Counseling; Couples Counseling; Family Therapy; Grief Support; Anger Management; Coaching; Educational Services; and other Ther**eutic Offerings.
