Speech sounds develop over time, and not every sound is expected right away.
There’s a pretty wide range of what can be typical. Some sounds come in really early, while others can take years to fully develop.
This post is just a general guide to help you get a better idea of what speech sounds are often expected by different ages. It’s not meant to make you panic over one sound your child can’t say yet.
A child might:
• say a sound correctly sometimes but not consistently yet
• be harder for unfamiliar people to understand
• develop sounds a little earlier or later than peers
But if you’re noticing your child is frequently hard to understand, getting frustrated when communicating, or not making progress over time, it’s always okay to ask questions.
You never have to wait until things feel “bad enough” to get support.
Save this post for later if you think you’ll want to come back to it!
