It’s not every day you can walk through a giant colon — but it’s a great way to start an important conversation about colorectal cancer.

At our recent Galentines event, this interactive display helped make colon cancer awareness a little more approachable (and a lot more memorable).

Colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, but only if it’s caught early. The good news is there are several screening options available, including simple at-home tests.

If you’re 45 or older, talk with your provider about getting screened. It could save your life.

Congratulations to Gidget, our latest BEE Award recipient! Gidget was nominated and selected as a CNA, as BEE Awards are given to non-nursing care team members. Since her nomination, she has graduated from nursing school, passed her boards, and is now a registered nurse on MS3!

One patient said it best: "Gidget brings happiness into the room every time she comes in. She's a fun conversationalist and makes frequent visits to make sure patients are comfortable. Gidget = Sunshine."

The BEE Award — Be Exceptional Every Day — recognizes care team members who go above and beyond for patients, families, and colleagues.

Marya, RN, from our Labor & Delivery team, is our most recent DAISY Award winner!

She was recently honored for her outstanding care. One patient shared: "After my delivery I had a slight fever and was lightheaded. Marya helped me shower, dried me off, applied lotion, and even brushed and braided my hair—all while I was in a wheelchair. She made me feel BETTER because she genuinely cared about my mental and physical well-being. She was ALWAYS encouraging me during labor. I will never forget her."

The DAISY Award recognizes nurses who go above and beyond, providing compassionate, skillful care every day. This international program celebrates nurses who make a real difference in patients’ lives.

Tamara Bannerman is a Physical Therapist at MaineHealth Franklin Hospital who works with inpatients across MS3, the ICU, and the Emergency Department. After starting her time at Franklin in outpatient therapy, she rotated through inpatient coverage and quickly discovered it was where she wanted to be.

“I found I loved it so much that I asked to stay after my first rotation,” Tamara says. “That was five years ago.”

What Tamara enjoys most about her work is the people she gets to collaborate with every day. “Working on inpatients gives me the opportunity to work with colleagues across many disciplines to help restore a patient’s function and mobility in ways that are meaningful to each individual.”

Tamara has been part of the Franklin care team for just over eight years, and we’re grateful for the positivity, teamwork, and dedication she brings to our patients and colleagues every day.
