Society tells us a story about childbirth based on fear. The more we learn about birth, the less fear there is surrounding birth.

Women are strong, and birth is beautiful. Let's work toward a satisfying birth experience by lifting each other up and providing education to support a confident birthing person. ❤️

When making decisions for you, your baby, and your family, it is important that you have all the information.

✨️ What are the risks and benefits?

✨️What are the alternatives?

✨️What if we do nothing(or do nothing right now)?

Always take the time to breathe and know your options if the situation is not an emergency! (Another great question- Is this an emergency?)

Breastfeeding has many false narratives floating around. Most new mothers can feel overwhelmed with the idea of breastfeeding and the challenge that may lie ahead. Know that whatever you want your journey to look like, there are people who want to help. See a few truths below!

✨️The amount of breast tissue you have does not affect how much milk you can make!

✨️ Exercise is healthy and promotes both physical and mental health. You can exercise while breastfeeding.

✨️Breastfeeding does not have to stop at a certain age. The AAP recommends feeding your baby breastmilk for 2 years or longer as long as it is mutually desired!!

✨️Another one I had to add - you don't need to pump to breastfeed! But you can also exclusively pump! Every journey is unique!

Happy World Breastfeeding Week!

Every breastfeeding journey looks different, for each mother, each baby, and each season of feeding.

In honor of all the hardworking mamas out there, let's celebrate. Celebrating the mama who fed her baby breast milk for the first hour of life but found formula to be the best option for their family, the mama who set her alarm every 2 hours to pump while her baby was in the NICU, the mama who was able to breastfeed her baby through toddlerhood, to all the mamas out there and their magic milk!

Breastfeeding can be extremely demanding both physically and mentally. Each journey will look different, and it might not be what we hoped or anticipated. However, I find this to be true in many aspects of motherhood! Each motherhood journey unique and special ❤️.

Keep going mama, you've got this!

The pelvic floor is something many of us are not intentionally in touch with until we reach motherhood. Hello, down there?

Our pelvic floor health is so important as it is connected to the proper function of pelvic organs. This can affect childbirth, sexual function, bladder control, and bowel control.

So how do you we start to get in touch with these special muscles? 3 ways are diaphragmatic breathing, jaw relaxation, and yoga.

🌻Breathing 360 degrees all the way through your back and down through the pelvic floor

🌻Getting in touch with how you hold stress in your jaw and how this can impact your pelvic floor.

🌻Prenatal yoga was a huge eye opener for me, and getting in touch with my body. Shout out to for her amazing prenatal classes!

When all else fails, reach out to a professional if you are able to! Pelvic floor PTs are there to help whether you are in the perinatal period, newly postpartum, or much farther out.

1 in 3 babies in the United States come into this world via a belly birth! Cesareans are imparitive in many situations and can save the lives of mothers and babies.

How might a doula support you during a cesarean?

✨️ A doula will be there before, during, and after birth. They will not leave the hospital. More hospitals are allowing doula support in the OR, but it may take some extra advocating.

✨️A doula will be there to help prepare you for the process, whether planned or unplanned.

✨️ A doula will help emotionally support you after the birth and find resources for your postpartum health.

The sweat, tears, grit, patience, and endurance it takes to be a parent are sometimes so great we can only feel the heaviness. I want you all to take the time this week to reflect on the moments that made it all worth it ✨️

✨️The moment you held your baby for the first time
✨️The moment you saw their first smile
✨️The moment they were able to express their feelings
✨️The moment you were able to advocate for them and show them how much you believe in them
✨️The moment you were able to laugh together until your sides hurt

There are so many special moments along the journey of being a mom or parent. Surely not all of the moments will be joyous, and we will make our fair share of mistakes along the way.

You are strong and courageous. You are patient and kind. Keep your heart open for those beautiful moments and cherish them!

How can I encourage breastfeeding after birth?

It is important for mom and baby to have time to relax and be comfortable together after birth. The golden hour is a term coined for an uninterrupted time of bonding after birth. Skin to skin contact allows for body temperature regulation and familiarization with the mother in this new world. Even if skin to skin can not be done immediately, it is still beneficial once possible.

The baby's hands will smell of amniotic fluid after birth, which matches the smell from the mothers montgomery glands. The baby will be drawn toward this familiar smell! If the baby is placed below the breasts on the belly, there can be a phenomenon that happens called the breast crawl. This is a natural process where the baby can do an upward crawl and bobbing maneuver to latch themselves to the breast.

To allow for proper alignment, good ques include belly of the baby against belly of the mother, support of the babies neck by mother or other support people, and baby's nose to the mothers ni**le. The initiation of breastfeeding after birth can take 1-4 hours if allowed to happen naturally. Not rushing mom or baby and allowing them to learn together is encouraged. If milk can not be removed by the baby within 4 hours, due to a multitude of reasons, it is suggested that milk be removed to encourage milk supply.

"Of all the ways birth outcomes could be improved, continuous labor support seems like one of the most important and basic needs for birthing people. Research has shown that labor support from doulas is both risk free and highly effective. "

A doula is there to focus solely on the wants and needs of the birthing person. Our goal is to provide physical and emotional support to allow the mother to have positive memories of her birth. We are here to support you in your journey of becoming a mother, or expanding your motherhood, and are able to give you the confidence to advocate for yourself.

There is much more information on this topic on the evidence based birth website in their article, the evidence on doulas.
