Congrats to my boy Taiden, Tater-Tot, and Little Boi by his brothers. He graduated with high honors from Utah State this week. So proud of him for graduating not only debt free, but with savings in the bank. He did this without help, and through hard work and determination. Excited to see his influence on the outdoor world, as he shares his talent and education as an outdoor product designer!

The other day, I was filling up my van at the gas station when something unusual caught my eye. There was a gentleman sitting in the passenger seat of the car next to mine who looked, well, lifeless. I found myself glancing over, half-expecting him to move, but he didn’t budge.
Curiosity got the better of me, and I almost approached the lady in the driver’s seat to ask what was going on. Thankfully, she came over to chat about my van, which has my business logo on it. We struck up a conversation, and I shared that I’m an anxiety counselor, explaining a bit about my work.
Then I decided to ask her a question that had been nagging at me: “What’s in your front seat?” She laughed and explained that it was just a mannequin! She’d dressed it in a mask and an old flannel shirt to keep her company during her travels.
As we talked, she opened up about her journey. She had lost her husband a year and a half ago and was traveling alone from Wyoming through Utah. The mannequin was her way of coping with the anxiety of being on the road solo; it gave her a sense of comfort.
We chatted about her loneliness and how much she missed her husband. It felt like a mini therapy session at the pump, but more than that, it was two humans connecting in a meaningful way. We ended our conversation with a hug, and I walked away feeling grateful for that moment.
Sometimes, it’s the unexpected encounters that remind us of our shared humanity. I’m glad I had the chance to talk with her and share that brief but impactful experience.

I’M NOT A CAT PERSON. This is what I’ve always believed about myself. I was riding my bike on a late night de-stressing adventure. I quickly stopped on the path when I was startled by a black cat who jumped into the path. The feline quickly climbed onto my handle bars and sat there looking at me. He then jumped onto my shoulders and just snuggled in. I don’t know if this is normal cat behavior, as I only speak dog. What can tell you is that God does work in mysterious ways. This cat “hug” and act of kindness was exactly what I needed. I guess you could say I’m a cat guy now.

It’s World Mental Health Day. Never has there been a more important time in history to be aware of mental health. This statement has been said for decades, it’s time we start talking about mental like we do our physical health. Heath is Health!
