Did you know: ββοΈπ§
APHASIA is a loss of language, most often caused by damage in the left side of the brain. This damage is typically caused by strokes but can also result from car accidents, gunshot wounds, or other traumatic injuries to the brain, as well as some conditions like primary progressive aphasia or frontotemporal dementia.
People with aphasia can have difficulty understanding language, speaking, reading, and/or writing. But since music, melody, and rhythm is typically housed in the (undamaged) right side of the brain, people with aphasia can still sing! πΌβ€οΈ
Our SLP, Brenna has led the Stroke and Aphasia Recovery (StAR) Program choir for Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center for the past 13 years!
This choir is made up of individuals with aphasia!
Our choir just wrapped up for the year and included approximately 50 members.
If you have a loved one with aphasia, assist them in understanding you better by speaking more slowly, writing key words, gesturing, and drawing pictures as needed. And please encourage them to sing! π₯°
Don't forget, APHASIA is loss of language, NOT intelligence.
