This is where Sacred Rage comes in. Sometimes, we have to ask ourselves: What is the next best thing I need to do?
Then—decide!
That’s when the real work begins. Because sometimes, this means saying no to everything else and feeling the emotions that come with that decision. In that moment, we face three options:
1. Never take action. This is the path of staying stuck in the same cycle over and over. (I’ve been there—I know.)
2. Take action but suppress the feelings. This leads to emotional numbness, the very thing that contributes to our high rates of anxiety, depression, and even su***de. It’s what most people do.
3. The natural way—the way of the animal kingdom, the indigenous people, the way we were designed to live.
Ask yourself: What is the next best step?
Make the choice to create change.
Feel the emotions that arise with that hard decision.
Example:
Sometimes, this means putting our child into childcare when all we wanted was to be at home. Sometimes, it means going no-contact with someone we love. Whatever it is, instead of just “toughing it out” and pushing through, we can acknowledge: This isn’t what I wanted, but it’s what needs to happen to break the cycle.
And with that, emotions will rise—your heart may ache, you may feel angry, frantic. Acknowledge these feelings, and here’s the key part… GET THEM OUT OF YOUR BODY!
Deep breath—YELL
Deep breath—YELL
Deep breath—SCREAM
Deep breath—CRY
Deep breath—CALL OUT TO SPIRIT
FEEL the pain, EXPRESS the emotion, UNTIL YOU ARE EXHAUSTED.
Then—get a good night’s sleep. Because when you wake up, you will take action—not from a place of hardness or repeating yesterday’s steps, but from a new direction, breaking the cycle once and for all.
