Small Business/Freelancer Bookkeeping Tip Part 5:

Keep Your Receipts

The IRS can still require receipts when it comes to deductions when it comes to tax time or an audit. While you can keep paper files of your receipts, today's technology can easily scan receipts and be saved digitally with bookkeeping software. For example, an owner can scan a receipt with their phone using the QuickBooks Online app. The receipt and expense can be quickly saved and recorded while on the go and helps owners from overflowing with paper receipts.

I also recommend creating a system to save sales receipts sent through email. Those emails can be easily labeled for future reference or they can saved as pdf files and uploaded into QuickBooks. Be consistent in your process and it will save you time and energy down the road.
