Foundation History: Cape Fear Valley Health Pavilion - Lillington Ribbon Cutting πŸŽ—

One year today on Oct. 29, 2024, we celebrated the Ribbon Cutting at the Cape Fear Valley Health Pavilion - Lillington, home to the new Cancer Center in Harnett County. The three-story, 66,000-square-foot building hosts a variety of specialty clinics and is anchored by the Cancer Center. To bring this vision to life, Harnett Health Foundation launched the Bringing Hope Home to Harnett County fundraising campaign with a goal of supporting local cancer patients.

The Cancer Center provides a full range of cancer treatments including chemotherapy and radiation therapy, and features expanded chemotherapy infusion areas, modern technology, a dedicated team of experienced oncologists and a peaceful Healing Garden outside the infusion suites. From diagnosis to comprehensive treatment, these services are all offered under one roof.

Naming opportunities in the building are still available. To learn how you can support cancer care in Harnett County, contact Scott Childers at (910) 766-7119 or schilders@capefearvalley.com.

Did you know that Art Therapy is offered for cancer patients at Cape Fear Valley Health? πŸŽ—πŸŽ¨

According to Alejandra Williams, Lead Oncology Clinical Social Worker, "Art Therapy provides a safe space to express how a patient may feel when it is difficult to put their feelings and/or thoughts into words."

One cancer patient shared their positive experience by saying, "Art Therapy was more than just art. It was hearing the words of wisdom of Yael (Certified Art Therapist) and gaining the confidence that I will be okay. Through the group, I learned that cancer was not the end of the world for me. I would race to get to art therapy because of the kind of day I was having and found the serenity I needed. If it was not for Yael, I would not be where I am today. "

Art Therapy is made possible through grant funding from the Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County and the North Carolina Arts Council.

Pictured is an example of a piece constructed by a patient during art therapy. A patient was asked to draw herself as a tree. She identified herself as a willow tree and drew a bunny underneath to represent her daughter. She described the storm above as her cancer, and she is trying to protect her daughter from the β€œstorm.”

What is Friends of the Cancer Center? πŸŽ—

Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation's Friends of the Cancer Center (FOCC) began in the late 1980s and provides crucial support and resources for cancer patients at every Cape Fear Valley Health cancer facility. For patients undergoing treatment, this can include transportation to and from appointments, nutritional supplements and wig vouchers, emergency assistance for housing and utility payments, early detection screenings, educational materials and more. When a need is identified by our healthcare team, FOCC steps in and helps make these programs possible.

According to FOCC Advisory Council Chair Margaret Ann Alligood, β€œI feel the greatest impact of FOCC is our ability to reach out and touch cancer patients during their treatment journey. There are many needs, from emotional support to financial help. Our greatest need is for our cancer patients to know that FOCC is here for them because we know that cancer is personal.”

Impact Corner: Cold Cap Therapy Program πŸŽ—πŸ©·

The possibility of losing hair during cancer treatment can be an added stress to a scary and difficult time. To help support this part of one's cancer journey, Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation purchased Cold Cap Therapy equipment to help prevent hair loss for cancer patients. Thus far, 20 patients in our community have utilized this method.

According to Annah Boyd, Service Line Director for Medical Oncology at Cape Fear Valley Health, "The Cold Cap Therapy Program gives the patient hope that they will not lose their hair. This is a huge concern for women going through an already life changing journey. This program gives patients a sense of control over a part of their body during a time where many things seem uncertain."

Meet Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation Board Secretary, Dr. Karen Jones!

A big Nittany Lions fan, Dr. Jones grew up in Pennsylvania where she received a degree in Physical Education from Penn State University, while playing collegiate Field Hockey and Lacrosse. After graduation, she attended Temple University for medical school and completed her residency at Geisinger University where she met her husband, Dr. Joel Horowitz (Cape Fear Valley Health General Surgeon). The surgeon duo married in Switzerland, spent two years in Buffalo for Dr. Horowitz’s fellowship, moved to Durham for three years, and in 1998, eventually made their way to Fayetteville. Here, they raised their three children and began their careers with Cape Fear Valley Health.

After a long career in orthopedic surgery, Dr. Jones retired in 2016. Since retiring, she enjoys traveling with her family, taking annual trips with her two siblings and spending time with her dogs (she has a special place in her heart for golden retrievers!). She was inspired to give back and joined the Foundation board in 2017. When asked to recall her favorite Foundation memory, Dr. Jones credits the growth of the Graduate Medical Education Program and said, β€œseeing the Center for Medical Education come to life has been amazing for our family to witness. To watch the residency program grow into what it is today makes me excited for the future of healthcare in our region.”

Thank you, Dr. Jones, for serving on the Foundation board and for continuing to support our community and health system!
