Sheriff Hubert Peterkin Scholarship Support

Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation is proud to honor the legacy of Sheriff Hubert Peterkin by recognizing a Hoke County high school senior who intends to pursue higher education in the health sciences field and is a dependent of a law enforcement agent in the county. This scholarship is funded through donations to Friends of Hoke with Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation. Today was a special day at Hoke County Hospital as we celebrated the success of the Puppy Creek Fire Department’s Run for a Cure 5K! 🩷 Through their annual event, they generously donated $10,000 to support mammograms for patients in Hoke County.

Since 2015, the Puppy Creek Fire Department has contributed more than $75,000 toward mammograms at Hoke Hospital (yes, you read that right!). Their dedication to raising cancer awareness and supporting our community is truly inspiring, and we are deeply grateful for their continued generosity. 🎗️

At Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation, we see the power of kindness every day. Families turn to our health system during some of life’s most vulnerable moments, trusting they will receive compassionate, high-quality care. That care is made possible because people like you in our community choose to show up again and again in ways both seen and unseen. 🩷

This winter, we invite you to consider an unexpected yet meaningful act of kindness: creating or updating your will. Having a plan in place can bring peace of mind for you and clarity for your loved ones, especially during times of uncertainty.

We’ve partnered with FreeWill because their free and secure online resource guides you through making your will in as little as 20 minutes. We also encourage you to use FreeWill to update an existing will because you can easily make changes online whenever you’d like.

If you choose, you’ll also have the option to include a gift to Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation that helps ensure compassionate care, advanced treatments, and community health programs remain available for generations to come.

A huge thank you to the Golden LEAF Foundation for supporting medical education at Cape Fear Valley Health with a transformational gift. Not only does this investment strengthen healthcare in our region, but it has a positive economic impact.

“When we hire a physician, all the jobs that support that doctor come with the position, including nurses, front desk staff, radiology, administrative roles,” said Cape Fear Valley Health CEO Mike Nagowski.

This gift has helped advance instructional technology in the Center for Medical Education's auditorium, creating a modern, flexible learning environment for resident training and distance learning.

As we reflect on Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation’s past 30 years, one theme stands strong...kindness. Philanthropy and acts of kindness are deeply interconnected, resulting in a more compassionate society. The ripple effects can be tremendous, as we have witnessed over the past three decades.

💙 You’ve partnered with us to care to the underserved, bringing essential needs to rural communities and wellness visits to neighbors next door.
💙 You’ve rallied to support our emergency services, providing lifesaving equipment and comfort items during emergencies and natural disasters.
💙 You’ve braved a global pandemic with us, caring for the most vulnerable in our community and supported the nurses and doctors who care for us every day.
💙 You’ve championed advancements in technologies, equipment and services, providing exceptional healthcare for all our patients.

Whether you hosted a toy drive for our pediatric patients, registered for a signature Foundation event, made a gift in honor of a healthcare provider, or raised awareness of our mission by sharing one of our social media posts...the theme still remains the same.

Throughout this year, you will see how Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation exudes acts of kindness through our work. We encourage you to use your healing power of kindness and join us today.

2026 has just begun...how will you make a difference this year?
