Community Paramedic Tara Tucker is on a mission to revolutionize how first responders handle mental health, addiction, and crisis care—because for her, it’s personal.

John Eklund, host of Living on Incline, sits down with Tara, a community paramedic with Cape Fear Valley Mobile Integrated Healthcare, to talk about her boots-on-the-ground work bridging emergency response and long-term recovery. From opioid overdose calls to faith-based outreach events, Tara is meeting people where they are—and helping entire communities heal.

What started as a career in EMS turned into a life calling after losing someone close to her to overdose—and nearly losing her own son to addiction. Tara’s story is raw, inspiring, and a masterclass in what it means to live on mission.

From classrooms to careers — our connection with FTCC just grew even stronger!

Cape Fear Valley Health’s $2 million gift to Fayetteville Technical Community College supports local Nursing and Allied Health programs and marks the largest donation in FTCC history.

To celebrate, FTCC has renamed two buildings:
💙 Cape Fear Valley School of Nursing
💙 Cape Fear Valley School of Health Sciences

“We are deeply grateful for Cape Fear Valley Health’s generous gift to expand healthcare pathways at Fayetteville Technical Community College,” FTCC President Dr. Mark Sorrells said. “This investment represents a transformative step forward in addressing the critical need for high-quality healthcare in the Sandhills Region, a recognized healthcare desert.”

🎃 Happy Halloween! Don’t forget, it’s also ! 🏃‍♀️💪

As you enjoy the festivities tonight, remember that a 30-minute walk can burn approximately 100-200 calories. This estimate varies based on factors like your body weight, walking speed, and even the terrain. If you’re heavier or walking briskly—especially uphill—you’ll torch more calories than someone strolling at a leisurely pace.

Why not turn your Halloween adventure into a fun fitness challenge? Grab your little ghouls and goblins, hit the streets, and tackle those steep hills! 🏞️ Race back home after collecting treats for an extra cardio boost.

Let’s make this Halloween not just about candy, but also about staying active and enjoying quality time with family. Share your spooky fitness moments with us using ! 👻🍬✨

Meet Alicia Brown Harris, Oncology Social Worker with Cape Fear Valley Cancer Centers!

Alicia occasionally works at all three of our centers, but her primary assignment is at Health Pavilion North. She calls the cancer center there “a hidden jewel” of the health system.

Alicia understands managing life with a cancer diagnosis and treatments can be overwhelming. As an oncology social worker, she helps patients understand the many moving parts involved with care provision.

“In my role, I have the opportunity to work with patients to find ways to cope with this ‘new normal,’” she says. “We never deny that cancer changes you, but we choose to empower our patients to know that it is up to them to decide what that change will mean to their lives and who they will become as a result. My goal with each patient is to help them find a healthy support system that works for them, recognizing that everyone has different needs.”

Alicia knows her role is not always an easy one. There are heavy days and too many losses. But she has learned to savor every day and every moment with both her patients and her coworkers.

“The highlight of my week is if I have the pleasure of attending a ‘ringing out’ celebration with patients and their family,” she says. “Sometimes I get to stand with a patient who may not have family who can be there at that time. Ringing out is the traditional mark of the end of a course of treatment. It is a great honor to be allowed to show support and help our patients celebrate. In the clinic, we celebrate every chance we get. Surviving cancer is not just about enduring; it’s about emerging with a spirit that refuses to be broken. My ultimate desire is to affect improved quality of life for our patients, and this looks as different as each one of them. Sometimes my impact may be huge, and sometimes not so much. My time in the cancer center has taught me that little things are not so little.”

Thank you for all you do for our patients, Alicia. It is appreciated and we celebrate you this Breast Cancer Awareness Month!
