Babies are born with patterns, sometimes from how they grew in the womb, sometimes from how they entered the world. A tight spot in one area (neck, shoulders, hips, jaw) can ripple through the whole body, especially during something as complex as feeding.

Neck tension might make it hard to stay latched.
Jaw tension can lead to weak sucking or fatigue.
Hip and core tightness can cause arching, twisting, or instability.

Feeding isn’t just about the mouth; it’s a whole body activity. That’s why our feeding therapy department, led by our OTs, looks beyond the latch to support tension removal, alignment, and movement patterns so babies can feed with more ease.

If you’ve noticed your baby working extra hard at feeds, or seeming uncomfortable, our team is here to help. 💛

September is NICU Awareness Month, a time to honor the tiniest fighters and the families who love them. 💜

In the NICU, breastfeeding can look different than you might have pictured. It may start with a few drops of colostrum swabbed inside baby’s mouth, pumped milk given through a feeding tube, bottles filled with expressed milk, or gradual practice at the breast.

Every step matters. Colostrum is packed with immune protection. Pumped milk helps protect fragile guts and supports growth. Tube or bottle feeds provide nutrition when babies aren’t ready to coordinate sucking yet. Skin-to-skin and latching build the foundation for breastfeeding when baby is ready.

Each of these moments is breastfeeding in the NICU, and each one deserves honor 💓

If your NICU journey feels different than you imagined, you are not alone. Our team is here to walk alongside you and support you and your baby, in whatever feeding journey you’re on.

A day in the life of your b***s: Leaking. Refilling. Spraying. Soothing.

Working overtime with zero breaks, questionable bras, and one very demanding boss (hi 👶🏾). Yes, being a mom and providing breast milk are both full-time jobs!

Shoutout to the moms doing all this while sleep-deprived, half-dressed, and somehow still keeping the baby fed.

We see you—and we’re here if you need support. 👏🏽👏🏽

At the start of a feed, milk tends to be more watery and rich in lactose, perfect for hydration and quick energy.
As the feed continues, the fat content increases, helping your baby feel full, satisfied, and supported for growth.

It’s not two separate types of milk (foremilk vs. hindmilk). It’s a natural, beautiful gradient the body creates in real time!

This is why watching the clock or trying to “time feeds” doesn’t always help. Some babies feed 10-15 minutes on one side, then 5-10 on the other, while other babies feed the duration on both sides. Instead of focusing on how long baby is nursing, pay attention to:
✔️ Effective latch
✔️ Active swallowing
✔️ Baby’s cues and contentment afterward

Note: there are some babies who experience "lactose overload" in which they get full quickly from the higher carbohydrate-containing milk. This is distinct from a lactose intolerance in which the body has limited lactase enzymes to digest milk (very unlikely in babies). Lactose overload is seen with moms with extremely fast flow and oversupply, where the baby often takes 4-7 ounces in only a couple minutes. These babies often have trouble controlling the milk flow, and they may have green, frothy stools along with gassiness and discomfort. Once the oversupply/forceful letdown is addressed, these symptoms improve.

If you’re unsure whether your baby is getting enough milk or feeding efficiently, we’re here to help you figure that out. Whether it’s a latch issue, milk transfer concern, or tension in baby’s body, our team is here for it all!
