as a college student, Marie Bruck said “yes” to our fellowship and internship and it became a HUGE part of her life - so much so that she stayed on for 3 years, eventually mentoring others in the program.

she is now pursuing her master’s degree in speech-language pathology at the University of Kansas!

“every individual craves connection,” she says. “so often, people think individuals with disabilities don’t have the same needs or don’t value the same things, but from my experience, that is far from the truth.” Marie shared that she plans to one day launch a rEcess site in Kansas City!

“because where would we be if we didn’t have our friends, our community?” she asks. “that is such a large part of our everyday life, and everyone deserves that opportunity.”

meet Colin & Gage - one of our bEfriend Pairings!

they met over FaceTime through a mutual friend & hungout in person at a local bEfriend Community Gathering where they hit it off.

“I blinked and all of a sudden, Colin’s a huge part of life” Gage shared.

now, their rhythm is steady and familiar. they FaceTime twice a week to talk about their day, what they ate for lunch, and what they’re looking forward to. when they’re together, you’ll find them in downtown Bentonville, grabbing a bite from the For The Love food truck, jamming to Foo Fighters in the car, or enjoying ice cream at Spark CafĂ©.

“isolation is so difficult for anybody,” Gage says. “we’re all human. we all need that connection with each other. when it comes to Colin, he isn’t my charity work. he’s my friend, and when I’m not around him, I find myself talking about him all the time, and I look forward to the times we’re able to be together.

I’m thankful that I get to be one of the people in his life he calls a friend & that I get to call him my friend as well.”

“what support do you need?”

“more friends, please”

a simple question & an honest response on a sign up sheet created by Hazel Mooney, a local high school junior, as she began recruiting peers for the Teen Impact Group, a new initiative to gather teens with & without disability looking for a place to connect finding themselves between rEcess & bEfriend.

the group multiplies every month building genuine friendships, which don’t always come easily in high school. as teens get older, the gap often widens, and opportunities to connect become fewer.

but the gap is closing as these teens spend quality time together, having fun & being known, in a place where all are welcome 🎈

it gives us hope for the now and such hope for the future.

99 Balloons is ecstatic to be alongside some of the best orgs during Northwest Arkansas Gives again this year, and it’s coming up on April 9! it’s a day to connect people to local nonprofits, inspire community support, and ignite a movement of generosity that creates real change across our region.

sometimes the best people working tirelessly to pursue a more connected church can start to feel like they’re doing it alone - finding themselves a bit isolated as they seek to move people with disabilities experiencing isolation into greater community (what we call changing the story of disability).

one church working to launch rEcess in TX right now shared with us this morning, “our church has been needing something like this for a long time - it’s really an answered prayer.”
