our volunteers really bring the magic of rEcess to life - where kids with disabilities + siblings get to take the lead in choosing the fun!

whether it’s reading their favorite books on repeat, playing ALL the soccer games, or waving the parachute all through this respite night, it changes everything.

this “magic” is found in the relationships forming between people with & and without disability as they get to know and appreciate one another. 🎈

WHO WE ARE PART 5: at first we just wanted to give families rest + a place where kids with disabilities could just be kids and feel celebrated.

but as time passed, we watched those kids grow up and it may seem obvious but the need doesn’t end with childhood.

we wanted to offer spaces where adults with and without disabilities could have real, long term friendships. not a program. not a service. but a shared life together.

so we started bEfriend - a relational model of ministry for adults with & without disability to be Paired in 1-1 friendships and to be part of local Community Gatherings that any church or community could begin hosting🎈

WHO WE ARE PART 4: no one could have imagined the impact that would spread after the first rEcess night.

that night, a few kids who came were from Ukraine - a small seed that was planted. & as more churches were trained, we asked a bigger question - what would it look like to change the story of disability around the world? 🌎

thanks to some amazing friends in the therapy community (shoutout to TEAMworks), we got to take that question seriously. in 2013, a group of rEcess volunteers boarded a plane to Uganda for our very first global trip.

it changed everything - & we have partnered with such good people across the globe. currently, we have Global Partners in South Asia, Nicaragua, and Uganda who we learn alongside + provide support to.

WHO WE ARE PART 3: what began as a few families gathering for monthly rEcess nights quickly grew into something more than anyone had anticipated. these evenings became a backdrop for transformation where volunteers were changed, and families were known + seen.

this wasn’t just about providing a service. rEcess became the spark of a new kind of community. one centered on mutual care, dignity, and belonging. & it shaped everything 99 Balloons has done since.

over time, others began asking: “could we do this in our community too?”

what started with a small group in one city became a growing movement. our all-volunteer effort became a staffed organization equipped to help churches launch rEcess themselves, with the same focus on relationship over programming.

today, rEcess is a replicable model that churches around the country are using to build their own spaces of belonging. & 99B continues to walk alongside them as a holistic resource in disability ministry.

WHO WE ARE PART 2: the first initiative of 99 Balloons was rEcess in 2007 - a monthly respite event for families experiencing disability.

a night completely designed for children with disabilities + their siblings to have fun while parents/caregivers get a rare evening of rest.

this event would become more than an event, it would begin a life-long journey of being known.

& the capitalized “E” in rEcess is no mistake - it’s in honor of Eliot.

the Mooneys were on the receiving end of much help and assistance from others that enabled them to feel seen & known, so rEcess was a natural starting point…..serving families in ways that help them move from isolation into real relationships and community.

over the past several weeks, we’ve shared stories of 99B impact around the world! from a boy in Nicaragua signing “more” for the first time, to Asha’s presence at a national conference in Uganda, to families racing and laughing at Sports Day in South Asia… we hope you’ve gotten a great glimpse of how the story is changing!

and we hope you’ve felt invited into it.

in South Asia, our global partner hosted their much anticipated Annual Sports Day.

individuals with & without disability from nearby villages played games such as the lemon-and-spoon race, sack races, tug of war, and even a jalebi eating contest with hands tied behind the back (Jalebi is a local sweet treat)! it was a rare and refreshing opportunity to step aside from daily routines & just. be. together.

each individual there was celebrated big time & awarded a prize or gift before ending the day.

Sports Day was more than an event. it’s a reminder that every person deserves a place to be seen & known.

we are honored to support partners like our friends in South Asia who are building spaces of hope & real relationships for folks experiencing disability. 🌎
