At Almeida Behavioral Therapy, we believe progress should never come at the cost of trust.

Not all ABA is the same—and we are committed to doing it differently. We take a relationship-first approach, focusing on building trust before targeting change. Our team prioritizes connection, compassion, and understanding, creating individualized, supportive plans that honor each child’s voice.

This past Saturday at a community event, we came across shirts created for a different cause—but the message resonated deeply with us and perfectly reflected our values. It was a powerful reminder of the standard we hold ourselves to every day.

We move away from outdated, compliance-driven practices and instead focus on meaningful, respectful progress—because real growth happens when children feel safe, heard, and valued.

We choose trust over trauma—always.

Huge shoutout to our incredible team for showing up, showing out, and making a difference in our community this weekend!...

Couldn’t have said it any better! Thank you Dr. Barosa for helping to spread this message! ❤️

April 1 marks the start of Autism Awareness Month—but if we’re being honest, awareness is not the goal anymore. We are aware. We know autistic people exist. They are in our homes, our classrooms, our workplaces, our communities. Current estimates suggest 1 in 36 children in the U.S. is diagnosed with autism. Awareness isn’t lacking—acceptance is.

Acceptance looks like action. It looks like schools that don’t just accommodate, but truly include—where differences are understood, communication is supported, and behavior is seen as communication, not defiance.

It looks like playgrounds where children are taught to invite, not exclude. Where differences in play aren’t judged, just accepted.

It looks like airports where overwhelmed families are met with patience instead of stares. Where sensory needs are respected, not dismissed.

It looks like workplaces that recognize strengths beyond eye contact and small talk. Where neurodivergent individuals are not asked to mask who they are just to belong.Acceptance is choosing to learn, to pause judgment, to create space instead of barriers.

This month, let’s move beyond blue lights, puzzle pieces, and catchy slogans. Let’s build environments where autistic individuals don’t have to fight to exist as they are.

Awareness is passive. Acceptance is a decision. And it’s long overdue. ❤️

Autism is nonlinear.

It is not a straight line from “mild” to “severe.”
It is not a ladder someone climbs up or down.
It is not a fixed category you can fully understand in a five-minute observation.

We’ve all heard the labels:

“High functioning.”
“Low functioning.”
“Level 1.”
“Level 2.”
“Level 3.”

Even though the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition introduced Levels 1–3 to describe support needs, those levels are still snapshots in time. They describe how much support someone needs in specific domains — not their intelligence, their potential, their worth, or their future.

Functioning labels can be especially misleading.

“High functioning” often means:
✔️ You speak
✔️ You mask well
✔️ You meet expectations

But it can also mean:
❌ Your struggles are minimized
❌ Your sensory overload is dismissed
❌ Your burnout is invisible

“Low functioning” often means:
✔️ You need significant daily support

But it can also lead to:
❌ People underestimating your understanding
❌ Limited opportunities
❌ Decisions made without your voice

Autism is nonlinear because:
• Skills fluctuate
• Stress changes presentation
• Environment matters
• Development is uneven
• Strengths and challenges coexist

A child can read at a 6th grade level and still struggle to ask for help.
An adult can run a business and still shut down from fluorescent lighting.
Someone can need full support in one area and be completely independent in another.

Support needs change.
Capacity changes.
Context changes.

Autism is not a straight line. It is a dynamic profile.

And most importantly — it is not a measure of value.

When we move away from rigid labels and toward individualized understanding, we make room for dignity, autonomy, and meaningful support.

That’s where real progress happens. ❤️
