10 Things You Should Know Before Starting Therapy Beginning therapy can bring feelings of both excitement and uncertainty. Before you get started, here are 10 crucial things one therapist wants you to know.

Therapy can help us gain greater understanding—but it can do so much more! If you feel like you're going nowhere, learn what you can do to change that.

Healing is scary, but SO worth it.

Like fire more

Deciding to actively heal is terrifying because it means opening up to hope. For many survivors, hope has brought only disappointment. Although it is terrifying to say yes to yourself, it is also a tremendous relief when you finally stop and face your own demons. There is something about looking terror in the face, and seeing your own reflection, that is strangely relieving. There is comfort in knowing that you don't have to pretend anymore, that you are going to do everything within your power to heal. - The Courage to Heal #healingjourney #couragetoheal #thecouragetoheal #healingfromabuse #healing #recoveryfromabuse #decidingtoheal #ellenbass #lauradavis #survivors #facingyourdemons #facingthepast #nolongerpretending #notpretending #hope #terrified #opentohope #courage #couragous

People Talk About Their First Therapy Session

Today's Arts and Culture post is a short film of people sharing their stories of their first session in therapy and how their experience evolved.

Therapy is extremely different from talking with even immensely empathic and supportive friends. Each friend comes with their own history, feelings, tolerances, values, boundaries, wants and things that make them happy/unhappy. All these subtle nuances color their responses to you whether they know it or not.

Counselors have years of education and advanced degrees in self-esteem, human behavior and emotions, relationship dynamics and effective strategies, tools and interventions to help you gain insight, knowledge, resiliency and motivation to adapt and grow in ways that are only and specifically decided on by you without the influence of someone else.

I think there's a part of people, understandably so, that are afraid to be vulnerable/out of their comfort zone and seek out a counselor. But we aren't that scary, I swear. What do you think? Why do you or people you know avoid counseling?
