When discussing light versus heavy weight training, it's understood that both methodologies can contribute to muscle hypertrophy, albeit through slightly different mechanisms.

Training with lighter weights, typically in the range of 16-30 repetitions maximum (RM), can stimulate hypertrophy akin to moderate or heavy lifting (6-8 RM) when executed to task failure. This can even be achieved with remarkably light weights, as low as 20-30% of your one-repetition maximum (1RM), particularly when blood flow restriction (BFR) cuffs are employed. But why is this possible?

The answer lies in the degree of effort exerted during each set and the subsequent mechanical tension experienced by the active muscle fibers. In essence, when effort is maximal or near-maximal at the end of a set, muscle fibers undergo high levels of mechanical tension, irrespective of the weight being lifted.

Muscular fatigue, specifically peripheral fatigue (distinguished from central nervous system fatigue), plays a crucial role in hypertrophy. This fatigue typically becomes apparent when training near or to task failure, as indicated by a noticeable reduction in barbell speed despite consistent effort.

Interestingly, this can occur with any weight percentage. The key difference lies in the total volume needed to reach this point of fatigue: heavier weights will achieve this more 'time efficiently', while lighter weights require a longer duration.

The actual weight used in training, as Lyle McDonald states, serves as a "proxy for tension". It assists us in reaching the requisite level of fatigue necessary to stimulate muscle growth.

Training near task failure/to failure is vital to maximizing muscle growth. However, the frequency of training to failure is also influenced by the total volume of training undertaken each week.
