Most types of lower back pain are often referred to physical therapy as one of the first-line treatments. Physical therapy for low back pain includes guided therapeutic exercises that strengthen the lower back muscles and condition the spinal tissues and joints.

The short- and long-term goals of physical therapy for back pain typically include the following:

Decrease painful symptoms in the lower back and/or leg
Improve low back function to tolerate daily activities as independently as possible
Increase the spine’s flexibility and improve its range of motion
Formulate a maintenance program to prevent the recurrence of back problems
The exercises are intended to provide flexibility and strength training to the entire kinetic chain—groups of body segments, joints, and muscles that work together to perform bodily movements.

Physical therapy helps restore the patient’s ability to perform daily activities with little-to-no discomfort. Large-scale studies have shown that physical therapy can provide up to 60% improvement in lower back pain and other symptoms.

One of the biggest differences between a DPT vs PTA lies in the amount of schooling that one goes through to make it into their field of choice.

For physical therapist assistants, you’re looking at two years of school to attain your associate’s degree, the minimum and preferred entry requirement. During those two years, you’ll learn about the different types of therapies that exist, including deep tissue massage, mobility development, pain management, modality use and more. You’ll put these into practice with your fellow classmates, volunteers and in a clinical environment to hone your skills in therapy, patient interaction and communication.

Physical therapists face a much lengthier process to attain their degrees. You’ll need to first earn your Bachelor’s degree, which will take four years in most cases, and once that’s complete, you’ll move on to an approximately three-year Doctoral degree in Physical Therapy. When studying to become a PT, you’ll learn a lot more about theory, diagnosis and optimal treatment options in addition to the procedural mechanics that PTAs learn.

The schooling is different in both subject and length. You’ll be in school a lot longer to earn your Doctorate, seven or eight years compared to two, but the breadth of what you learn will be larger as well.

Here at Fayetteville Physical Therapy and Craigsville Physical Therapy, you will be seen/treated by the same DPT every visit.

Our Fayetteville office offers Aquatic therapy and Dry Needling.

Aquatic Therapy is physical therapy that takes place in a pool. Exercising in the water reduces pressure on painful joints, helping you to move more comfortably and get the benefits of physical activity.

Dry needling is a treatment that strategically places short needles in painful parts of your body. This stimulates the damaged tissue in your body to release tension and promote healing.
