Piedmont Transplant Institute and Piedmont Heart Institute surgeons have performed an innovative joint liver-heart transplant. The joint transplant for an adult patient is the first in Georgia in a decade, and just the second adult procedure performed in the state.

Piedmont is a destination for healthcare as Piedmont Atlanta is one of the busiest transplant centers in the country. Since the first in 2005, over 2,100 liver transplants have been performed at Piedmont Atlanta. There was a 24% increase in heart transplants this past fiscal year compared to the year prior. Ellen White from St. Simons Island never expected to become a patient at Piedmont, but the quality care and compassionate support she received inspired her to give back.

Despite experiencing fatigue and pain, Ellen drove to Columbus to help her granddaughter with a school project— only to end up needing help at the Piedmont Columbus Northside Emergency Department, where doctors discovered she had suffered a massive heart attack. She was rushed to Piedmont Columbus Midtown, where surgeons inserted two life-saving stents. Her recovery took a turn when she was later diagnosed with kidney failure and spent several days in the ICU at Piedmont Columbus Northside. Thanks to Piedmont’s high-quality care, Ellen is now regaining her strength and even traveled to Rhode Island in July!

On September 4, 2024, Apalachee High School was rocked by tragedy when two teachers and two students lost their lives and nine other victims were hospitalized. Today we honor the memory of those lost, the resiliency of the Apalachee community, and the heroes who rallied around them.

David Phenix, an Apalachee High School special education teacher was shot twice that day and EMS rushed him to Piedmont Athens Regional for care. There he found more than just treatment, he found a team committed to providing the highest quality care, so he could return to the life he loves.

From walking his daughter down the aisle to returning to the classroom, David’s journey is a powerful affirmation of gratitude for each moment and our ability to make a positive difference in every life we touch.

Justin and Breana Hendrix struggled for 10 years to get pregnant. They went through failed attempts at Intrauterine insemination, in vitro fertilization and timed cycles. Under the high-quality care of the Piedmont Physicians Surgical Specialists and Bariatrics team, they both had minimally invasive gastric bypass surgery in 2023 at Piedmont Columbus Regional Northside. Justin and Breana both lost nearly 180 pounds!

Their prayers were answered when they welcomed a baby boy named Maverick into the world last month! Breana says they’re blessed beyond measure and are all healthy.

When Michelle Young came to the Piedmont Henry emergency department, she didn't get a good look at her nurse, but she remembered the sound of her voice. After being transferred to the ICU and getting a pacemaker installed, she wanted to come back and thank the nurses that cared for her. She found Kayla Strickland in the ED and gave her a strawberry cake she freshly baked. Afterwards, she brought a lemon cake to the ICU. "I think it is important to recognize people when they do an outstanding job and make a difference in the lives of other people," Young said. "It was important for me to say 'Thank you.' I put a lot of love into those cakes, so I guarantee they're good."

Piedmont Fayette recently hosted 58 high school students for an event focused on careers in healthcare. Students heard from a hospital leadership panel who discussed their career pathways and responsibilities. They also shared the traits that they look for in a hospital employee and suggested ways students could prepare themselves for the future. The students then engaged with clinical staff to see healthcare tasks up close. They were able to simulate intubations, practice hands only CPR, hold surgical instruments, perform physical therapy and speech therapy exercises, and learned about emergency first aid and infection prevention.

Last December, Len Romano underwent standard hip replacement surgery, but then, post-surgery, he experienced a sudden drop in heart rate, leading him to see a cardiologist. Having led a very active lifestyle, he assumed he was in good health and was shocked when he discovered he had almost a 90 percent blockage in his widowmaker artery. After a procedure to remove the blockage, he went to cardiac rehab at Piedmont Fayette. It was there that he realized he was healing more than just his heart—he learned new exercises and nutrition habits—empowering him to cope with his new limitations. Piedmont Fayette is thankful to play a role in helping those in our community get back on their feet, living their best life.

Twenty-five high school students interested in a nursing career were accepted into a three-day Nurse Camp at Piedmont Fayette, where they got to learn and observe basic nursing skills like how to check blood pressure, basic wound care, and first aid treatment. Students also shadowed clinical staff and toured a helicopter air ambulance. We are honored to be able to hosts this educational opportunity for rising juniors and seniors as we invest in our community!

Piedmont Fayette was recently awarded a grant from Clothes Less Traveled to support the Thomas F. Chapman Family Cancer Wellness Program. The funds will empower 100 patients participating in the MyFitRX Cancer Fitness program with tips and tools that will help them manage common side effects of cancer, recover more quickly from treatments, and focus on long-term quality of life.

On Saturday, May 3, our Piedmont Fayette team climbed 880 stairs at Atlanta’s Promenade Tower during the American Lung Association’s Fight for Air Climb.

Through hands-on experience across various career paths, students gain valuable, transferable job skills while building confidence and independence.

This year’s cohort recently celebrated their achievements with a heartfelt graduation ceremony, where they reunited with Piedmont Fayette mentors who empowered them and recognized their incredible growth.

Sue B. has been a volunteer at Piedmont Fayette Hospital for 20 years. “I love volunteering. My background is in nursing, so I feel like I have a little something to offer—whether it’s helping people who call about their loved ones or sharing information about the services we offer here at the hospital,” Sue said. “As a phone volunteer, I try to reassure patients and let them know we’ve got them—we’re going to help however we can. It has truly been a joy to serve.”
