Joy believes care starts with seeing the person, not just their condition.

She would sit beside her client’s bed, read her books to her, and ask how she wanted to show up each day. By focusing on who she was—not what she had lost—Joy helped her rebuild confidence and identity. Over time, those small moments led to something bigger.

“You want each person to enjoy their day, no matter what their challenges are.”

After more than 40 years advocating for individuals with disabilities and helping families keep loved ones at home, Marie thought she had retired for good. But she missed the connection. In 2020, she joined Home Instead — and families are so glad she did.

Marie learned to count in Japanese so she and her client could do physical therapy exercises together, cheering at the end and even playing balloon volleyball (their record is 54 volleys!). Families call her a “walking angel” for the calm, creativity, and gentle humor she brings to those living with dementia or Parkinson’s.

Through music, crafts, movement, and meaningful connection, Marie helps every day feel joyful, meaningful, and full of dignity.

“It’s really fantastic just to know that the work that I do counts.”

When Maureen joined Home Instead in 2019, advocacy and caregiving became her daily work. She has prevented choking incidents, caught a client mid-fall on a staircase, and sat through long, emotional afternoons with those facing Parkinson’s, dementia, or hospice. Families rely on her when situations feel overwhelming because she brings steadiness, practical skill, and a presence that helps people feel less alone.

🏡 Home Care vs. Assisted Living in Washington: Which is More Affordable?

With care costs rising across Washington, many families are asking the same question—and the answer depends on how much help your loved one needs.

💡 Home care is often the more affordable choice when only part-time support is needed. You pay only for the hours of care, allowing your loved one to stay safe and comfortable at home.

📊 But as care needs increase, costs can quickly add up. In Washington, home care and assisted living often cost about the same once care reaches 30–40 hours per week.

❤️ Assisted living may become the more cost-effective option when daily or full-time support is needed, since it includes housing, meals, and 24/7 care.

✔️ Less care needed → Home care is usually more affordable
✔️ More care needed → Assisted living may save money

Every situation is unique. The right choice balances cost, comfort, and quality of life.

We’re here to help you navigate your options. 💜

Being an advocate for your senior parents isn’t about taking over—it’s about showing up, speaking up, and making sure their voice is heard

As our parents age, life can get more complicated—doctor visits, finances, living arrangements. Here are a few simple ways to support them while respecting their independence:

Listen first
Understand their wishes, values, and concerns before making decisions.

Help navigate healthcare
Attend appointments (if they want you to), keep track of medications, and ask questions.

Keep an eye on finances
Watch for scams, organize bills, and offer help—but always with transparency.

Check their living situation
Is their home still safe and comfortable? Small changes can make a big difference.

Stay alert to changes
Notice shifts in memory, mood, or daily habits and encourage support if needed.

You don’t have to do it alone
Lean on family, friends, and community resources.

Speak up when needed
Whether it’s with doctors or services, be their advocate when things get confusing.

And don’t forget—you matter too. Take care of yourself along the way.

Supporting our parents is one of the most meaningful roles we can have.

Milagros knows it’s often the smallest things that matter most.

🌿 Gnome Sweet Gnome – A Little Joy While You Heal 🌿 Brought to you by Home Instead

At Home Instead, we know that time spent in a hospital or healing facility can make for long days. That’s why we’re spreading a little cheer across South King and Pierce County!

Keep an eye out—you might spot a hidden gnome nearby 👀

Just like finding a rubber duck on a cruise, each gnome is a small surprise meant to bring a smile and remind you that you’re not alone on your journey. Your gnome is there to help lift your spirits as you heal and get closer to home.

If you find one, feel free to snap a photo and share the joy 💚
