When a person is on a ventilator, remember the person and the ventilator work as one. The ventilator depends on the settings and patient being there to function correctly and the patient depends on the ventilator to efficiently inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. When you need to troubleshoot a ventilation problem, start at the patient’s trach tube, down the circuit and on to the ventilator. An alarming machine can wait. Take care of the person first.

There are many things that can go wrong when caring for someone who is technology dependent, but we will teach you—in our simulation lab—how to maintain optimal chest rise, an open airway, and successful ventilation. At its core, it’s all about chest rise. When a person has a tracheostomy tube and mechanical ventilation, it's critical to make sure their chest rises with each breath.

The first week of classes at BreatheWell Inspiration have been completed. The energy and positive feedback from the nurses are exciting and affirming that this level of education has great value for nurses/caregivers who care for the medically complex community. The ability to practice the care and participate in emergency airway care scenarios prepares caregivers to act on their feet and help these patients thrive and survive when it matters most.
