From the seniors at Vicinia Gardens Intermediate Care โ to all the Younghans heading back to school: weโre cheering for you! ๐๐
A little time-travel from our classrooms in the 1940s and 1950s โ and some timeless advice:
- ๐ซ What school was like for us: wooden desks with inkwells and sometimes double desks, chalkboards and overhead projectors or filmstrips on special days, paper handouts typed or mimeographed, no computers or calculators โ just pencil, pen, and plenty of practice.
- ๐ฉ Dress and discipline: many of us wore uniforms or our โSunday best,โ teachers expected strict manners, and classroom routines and recitation were the norm. Respect for teachers and punctuality were emphasized.
- ๐งฎ Teaching style: lessons were often teacher-led with a lot of writing practice and memorization, recitation, and written drills. Tests and recaps were common โ we learned by repetition and repetition built mastery.
- ๐ฅ Community and play: we walked to school or rode the bus, played simple recess games, and joined small clubs or sports when available. Neighborhood schools felt like close communities.
- ๐ฌ Social context: opportunities varied by place and time โ some of us had limited resources or extracurriculars, while others benefited from strong local support and older siblings helping with homework.
Good luck with your studies and your future โ we believe in you, Younghans! Keep curiosity alive, work hard, and enjoy the journey. โจ๐
